Don't fool yourselves into thinking ND has been on that level in the past three quarters of a century. Not Parseghian. Not Devine. Not Holtz. And they never were going to be. So anyway, we won't be on the level of the current version of Bama. Not ever. The 1940s will not be returning anytime soon. However, a run like Parseghian or Holtz is still possible.

some here think its possible (if we went all in and lowered standards) to be on Bama's level. It just simply isn't possible, so we should stop thinking it is. We should also recognize that the ND football eras they look back on with such admiration weren't on tbat level either.
What you are saying is true of nearly every other football team besides Bama and Clemson. ND is a solid 3-5 ranked team. It is just that there is a significant drop off after #2...significant. Bama has been able to assemble ND 1940s talent, and Clemson has assembled Holtzian ND Talent, so these are very good teams. Holtz's best teams would have a chance to beat Bama and Clemson. I don't see any reason to besmirch our former greatness because of this loss to Clemson. I don't think this current team is as good as we can do at ND now.
You basically made most of the same points I did.
I'm stuck in an airport with delayed flights, coming back from the game. Pardon if I misread your post.

realistic and it hasnt been for 75 years. I'm fine with aspiring to the Holtz level of success. That's in li e with the likes of Carroll, Stoops, etc.
