Being a QB coach for a couple of years is a nice way to gain some experience, but as an offensive coordinator, you are responsible for putting together all of the pieces of the puzzle, and not just making sure that a singular piece that you oversaw, was ready. Maybe he could be an OC at a lesser school, but at ND, we're going to want someone who has enough experience to handle things. Either that, or continue working as the QB coach here for a couple more years.
Now, if he had a couple of years as an OC at the said lesser school, and produced nice results, I would definitely be willing to take a chance, but at this time, he's simply not ready.
Put it this way... Another young coordinator, Clark Lea, had a lot more experience as a position coach before becoming the DC here. I'd like to see something similar with Rees.
