Could be plead down, sure. But they were trying to walk him to his dorm and charge him with nothing and he slugs them.
pissin or poopin in a squad car? Did the female cop outrun him? Color blind and did not recognize blue and red flashing strobes? Carrying a lousy fake id? Poop in his girlfriend’s laundry basket?

He's a 20-year old college kid who went drinking. Most 20-year old college kids go drinking. He had too much to drink; again, it's not like he's the only 20-year old kid to drink too much. From what we can tell from the articles and police reports, he was sufficiently drunk that he didn't even know where he was, then he punched the ND security officers. Usually, the University bends over backwards to keep ND students away from the South Bend police, so I imagine he was in pretty bad shape. I wonder if he threw hard punches or if he was so drunk he had nothing on them (he's big enough he could do some damage if he wanted to and was functional), but in his drunken state I'm certain he wasn't thinking clearly.
He screwed up, but does the football team, and the University, want to wreck his whole life over it? Assuming there is no pattern here with him, I'd lean toward getting him counselling, enrolling him in AA, and making him commit to community service, but I'd try not to kick him off the team or out of the University if I could help it. It seems to me it would be easier to show him some mercy than it would be if a starting player were involved. Of course, he would get no more chances.
Maybe I'm too soft, but the bottom line, to me, is that he's a kid who screwed up. If he agrees that this is a teaching moment, I'd give him one more chance.

He may leave on his own because of what his "penalty" might be but he isn't going to get kicked out. If this is his 1st offense, he isn't going to be forced out. He might have a few game suspension.
There is no star treatment in the way the University handles things...but Kelly has recently been quick to cut non-contributors if he can while giving a talented kid like Stepherson way too many chances.
Just because Stepherson's foibles were public and we're all aware of them and Tiassum's weren't doesn't mean they were treated differently.
Early.
who is "Mikey?"
Who are the "pinstripes?"

Given that the press has been all over Floyd for his alcohol abuse issues, you would think the press would have reported on this.
Sorry, any set of lawyers couldn't bury a story like that.
Of course, maybe there isn't a story to bury?
Mikes senior season. There were a couple of hockey players also involved and a few arrests. Anyway it started when Mike was beating the crap out of his GF and he beat it prior to the police getting there. She caught him him with another lady and he turned on her. She was taken to Memorial (?) hospital and the St Joe county prosecutor was going to go after Mike but lawyers for ND showed and charges by the family were dropped. S Mike played his senior year and went on to the NFL. From a lawyer with the SB prosecutors office and
Considering the media was all over his DUIs well before this alleged incident, the fact that this wasn't reported anywhere makes it your own little invention no matter what your own little mole in South Bend would have you believe. This was also at a time when relationships between ND and local police were particularly bad so if this actually happened it wouldn't have gone unnoticed by the local press nor kept under wraps by the police and prosecutors.
The idea that ND would look the other way or that the S.B. media (which lives for Notre Dame generated drama) wouldn't report one iota about this when, generally speaking, the South Bend cops as well as the prosecutor's office despise most everything ND is sheer fantasy. And then you throw in your make-believe factoid that "lawyers for ND" took care of him makes it even more laughable.
But you keep trying.

I lived in South Bend for 6 years. I have 5 relatives (including 4 that worked within the ND athletic Dept) that went to school in South Bend spanning 4 decades. Our collective knowledge re: ND is pretty broad. Add on our many connections (a few pretty significant including one who was the celebrant at my brother's funeral ...mostly now retired) at ND and some friends who continue to live there (including an attorney who used to work there). I know plenty about how the town works and have heard many stories that don't make the news. As a matter of fact, I mentioned your fairy tale to a good friend of mine who has lived there for most of his adult life and is well informed on in-town stories re: ND. He never heard this one, and he's heard plenty, and he agrees with me that the notion that anything about Michael Floyd at the time would have been kept on the down low by the cops and the media and the prosecutor's office is pretty ludicrous.
it. Believe what you would like about the place or whatever you don’t want to.
Make him run laps until he drops. Make him volunteer to teach adults how to read. Make him mow the grass in the cemetery. Make him live in Carroll Hall (ugh). Suspend him from playing for 4 games. But don''t kick him off the team or out of the University, because right now he's a kid who needs them more than ever.
the microscope as well as McKinley as they see it.
Hitting an officer? No. Underaged drinking first offense - yes. The glaring exception is Michael Floyd, and that decision, no matter how it's rationalized, discredited all of the higher standards that we actually do live by. Floyd decision was BS - he should have been suspended. The rationalized that it was his frist offense at ND.
Kelly has shown a very short leash lately with players buried on the depth chart and a longer leash with significant contributors (eg, Dex Williams, Coney).
Welcome to the ND Hall of Shame: Jarvis Edison, Clifford Jefferson, Max Redfield, and Javon McKinley.

I believe Floyd was also charged with assault at least once when he was drunk and disorderly.

But charge was dropped. Likely that charge will be dropped here if he pleads guilty to lesser charge.
