Link: Can Notre Dame Find Playmakers at Wide Receiver this Spring?
This is an ongoing theme at wide receiver. Our recruits, many of them four stars, get rave reviews when they sign then seem to get lost somewhere. Michael Young is an example. He has speed, elusiveness, makes plays and then gets lost somewhere. How many catches did he have last year, seven? Let's hope Lenzy (sp?) and others see the field and don't get lost or dog housed.

What guys with your opinion don't get is that QBs like Book or Rees and others that are less "talented", whatever that really means, win games. These guys win football games, unlike the Clausen's of the world. The offense moves the chains forward at a consistent and reliable rate. These type guys give you a chance by putting points on the board and avoid continuous 3 and outs like we saw with Golson and Wimbush.
You are a disciple of paper talent and star ratings so I get that it's hard to understand. But neither of those attributes win live football games. It's great for news sales and generally a disaster for Saturday live action. For the QB it comes down to grit, moxy and ability to get the job done. When has Jurko displayed any of this in a CFB setting? If there is a battle and he wins so be it. But there is nothing to date even remotely showing there should even be talk of a battle, other than lip service needed in order to keep people from coasting.
Book had a bad game against Clemson. Will he have another? Sure. The offensive coordinator had a bad game against Clemson. So did the Offensive line. So did the defensive players not named Julian Love. Dexter Williams had a pretty good game but was sparingly used (OC failure to notice and adapt). You're taking a small sample and projecting it out 12 games when you have a large sample 7 or 8 that you're ignoring (plus previous years and Spring battles). Don't go into coaching anytime soon, okay?
Also, nice hedge with illuding that regardless of who is QB the WRs we have will make them look good. So far, the WRs we have are average and unproven. They are a long way from "Monsters". Finke could be good if used properly. Claypool could be a monster if it starts clicking week in week out. Everyone else is an unknown.
He spit the bit in the biggest game...with a huge national tv audience...ugh...good kid, too short with a weak arm...open up the competition for a legit, big-time qb
It was a game in which he looked overmatched, as did ND's slow WRs.
I would rather there be an open competition for QB. You, however, believe that "there is nothing to date even remotely showing there should even be talk of a battle" other than paying "lip service."
As we saw last season, coaches win even when benching QBs who have won them a ton of games. In ND's case, they should also get more speed on the field at the wide-out positions. That means Finke should take a seat for a good portion of the game.

At this time, though, it's only logical that Ian Book is the #1 QB. He's an established starter, who has proven that he can get this offense running to near-peak efficiency.
I don't think anyone doubts that Jurkovec has a higher ceiling, but he's going to have to prove that he can throw an accurate ball, and that he can run the offense as intelligently. He'll get that chance this spring.
Book proved he can win lots of games, but did we see a QB who can win a championship? Hurts to say, but it didn't seem like it.
Regardless of who is QB, Claypool at the boundary, Austin at the X, Lenzy in the slot, and Kmet at TE is a pretty monstrous group--height at three positions, and speed in the slot and at the X. That should be hard to defend especially if Austin and Lenzy can mentally figure the game out.
Unlike the few elite true Freshmen QBs he did not do anything his Freshman year. In fact he did not even get the opportunity to play in 4 games and still redshirt. He could possibly have improved his chances by taking an early entry but decided he would rather play basketball. No doubt there will be those who say Kelly is a moron who doesn’t know how to handle QBs but whatever.
to anoint someone that can't make that move. Not saying he won't get better, but if he was elite he had as good a shot as one can get.
If Jurkovec wins the job, great. But there is no reason at this point to think he’s better than Book. Book played well, and played great at times.
