88-90 Holtz teams went 32-4 ( if I got the math right). I know it’s difficult to compare eras and Holtz had a lot of big wins ( Miami, Colorado , Michigan times 3, USC - lots of top five wins ( and even multiple number one teams defeated) but still it’s interesting that if - again big if - this will be our best three year run since then ( maybe better if they win bowl or playoff). Not many three years runs since the 70s runs will you find ND with only 5 losses. Hope I did not jinx us but it’s starting to feel like we are on the verge of something big.
It's information you feel is important to the context, and I think that is fair. But the original poster didn't misrepresent anything or "change history." I mean, it's not like he's claiming Kelly won a NC and Holtz didn't. Or giving incorrect records. You've read 1984, . . right? If this was "Orwellian," the poster would be saying Kelly has never lost a game and Holtz never won one. I'm sorry, but it was not a good use of the term.

the NC and the big game wins. Kelly has maybe one big game win . . . Oklahoma on the road in 2012. Holtz had many better than that. And a championship.

There is a difference between not putting something in the context you want it put in and changing historical facts. If the guy claimed Kelly didn’t lose to Alabama and Clemson, he would be rewriting history. What he did is much different than that. I mean, . . are you kidding me here? Have you read 1984? This hardly approaches the level of “dystopian” Try this: read Brave New World and take a soma. No, . . take two. Edit: sorry for being "pissy" about this. By chance I have recently reread 1984, Brave New World, Brave New World Revisited, and Amusing Ourselves to Death. So this subject matter is in the forefront of my mind.
not beat a top 5 team or a number 1 team. And his bowl record is horrendous. Ok sound logic.
It also would be in the top 5 records of any power five team during those 3 years. It is not perfect and of course everyone would like to win the NC, but compared to where we have been since 1993 it is pretty good. And IMHO seems to be headed in the right direction.
Not so much now and what little they do has been BK and Swarbrick being very persistent.
BK has a lot of flaws and should have been fired at least once, probably twice, but where he has the program now is impressive. People that aren't biased and understand the challenges ND has, realize this.
Now he has to keep ascending. We shall see, but he deserves the opportunity to do that.
Monk, Wadsworth and Saracino put the kibosh on that.
Kelly is a mixed bag. He done some things very well. Others not soo much. The problem here is that peeps either unconditionally love him or hate him. Neither view is accurate.
make the changes necessary. IMO he just needs to 1) Hire a new OC and 2) Keep his nose out of the offense. It’s patently obvious that the offense needs fixing. I find it hard to believe that every QB we’ve had were so incompetent that you couldn’t build something successful around them. Something is fundamentally broken there.
Recruiting is part of it, but we have some key pieces either in place or coming soon. Taylor might be the answer to recruiting a big time RB. Hopefully Tyree is the first.
I think he could be a really good coach if he would stay out of the coaching part.
As you suggest, perhaps Kelly is sticking his nose in too much. What decisions does he have behind the scenes? Surely Long wouldn't have hired Jeff Quinn out of thin air if it was his choice. Saban has gone after him twice, that has some value right there.
ND has several plays that could have been "system" TD's, meaning if you stick anyone with D-1 skill out there with the ball in his hands, he is scoring. Our QB couldn't get it to them. Is that Long fault? Some degree of the blame is on him for sure. How much is the hard part.
It's frustrating stuff because offense was always sort of the side of the ball us ND fans thought we shouldn't have issues competing on. Even after the Holtz years we could recruit OL, QB, RB, and WR. Defense was the scary part. What would you know, back to back years of really good defense and the offense can't get going.
Can ND pair this type of defense up with a 2015 type of offense. I hope.

We lack a true playmaker on O. Guy like Tyree or Johnson or even some of our injured guys would really help.
Book panics/gets flushed way too easily. He had time on several occasions to hit wide open guys if he had hung in there or knew how to slide the right way against pressure. D knows he rolls left almost every time. He literally rolls into pressure. Kelly’s system all revolves around the QB being able to make the right reads. Not seeing it with Ian. Game manager at best.
The way the D was playing, the conservative approach on O prolly wasn’t a bad idea in the second half. You could see them wearing down and the Jones run was no surprise. No real turnovers is a plus. The D play also just stuffed the life out of them and no way were they coming back.No need to take chances on the other side of the ball.
Don’t know how good UVA is overall, but they have some playmakers.
They did not turn the ball over. They ran the ball effectively. They were efficient. They wore down the defense so that we could put the game away on the ground.
They had three long scoring drives, a decent drive that turned into a missed field goal, and easily took care of business when given the ball on the 10 yard line.
People seem to ignore that the defense had a hell of a time stopping Virginia in the first half. At the half, the VA QB was 18-22 for over 230 yards. We made great adjustments, and the D played superbly in the second half. But the offense helped bail out the defense in the first half by keeping VA's offense off the field during three decent drives.
The thing people should be completely pissed about is Special Teams. An onside kick and muffed punt are serious turnovers (something the offense did not do). The missed field goal was kind of long, but it certainly didn't help to miss that one.
One directly. The other the O took in from the 6.
I have no problem with the conservative O after the D gave us those scores. However, overall, not impressive. Lots of one on one matchups not exploited. On one you could see Claypool just dropping his arms in frustration. Not many games against good teams where you get 8 sacks and 5 turnovers.
Our first punt was with 2:30 left in the first half. Our first three drives ended in two TDs and a missed FG. The half was nearly over before we got the ball a fourth time. We also got a fifth possession at our own 25 yard line with 43 seconds left, which ended in a punt. I don't count that as meaning much.
In the second half, we punted once, and immediately after scored a TD (the defense made it a short field, but that's not the Offense's fault). So basically, the first seven times they had the ball, they scored three touchdowns, had a good drive that ended in a missed field goal, and three punts (one of which was meaningless).
Even after the defensive fumble return made it 28-17, the offense mounted another long TD drive to make it 35-17.
I think people are taking themselves out of the reality of the game to find fault here.
Here’s my reality. Without those two td’s from the D, it’s a 21-20 game. Now meebe the O still picks up those two scores themselves, but I kind of doubt it. Now, I’ll take a 15 point win over a ranked team any day. But it’s not that huge a performance by the O, when the D has 8 sacks and forces 5 TO’s, essentially scores twice, and we win by 15.
Here’s another reality, we had 165 yards passing and ended up with about as many offensive yards as UVA. Not overwhelming. Plenty of reason to be concerned about this O.
