To me, this is mostly due to putting too much on the QB's plate. Golson was good in 2012 when they relied on the running game, but struggled in 2014 when the whole offense was put on his shoulders. Same thing with Kizer in 2015 and 2016. I think the problem with Wimbush was simply that defenses figured out he couldn't reliably hit short passes so they stopped defending them.
With Book, it is similar to 2014 and 2016. They are putting too much on him. Last year defenses had to account for Dexter Williams. This year they aren't respecting the run. Some of that is RB talent, but ND has enough OL talent to overcome that and Tony Jones is a fine college RB.
The solution is to rely on the run game more with Jones and Smith (who should be healthier) . A more conservative, ball control offense also complements the defense better.
after a great frosh season. This year he is stinking it up, and prob should have been
pulled from last nite game against OSU. Shit happens
You should pick up a high school playbook - these kids have a 125 page playbook in high school. Too much? what? come on?
If they are good - the game slows down for them. if they aren't any good - it never slow down for them and they rush everything
Book is in full rush mood they entire game.
Obviously Book is not a great QB right now. My point is that they should take some of the load off of him and put more on the running game. You disagree with that?

He had the same issues last year, but ND ran the ball well enough (other than against Clemson) that it didn't matter. That's my point.

This is major college football, they don't give him more than anyone else at this level. He's missing basic shit. First series he's got Kmet running free down the middle of the field uncovered, doesn't see him. Same thing happened with Tremble against New Mexico. He missed Claypool a number of times for huge gains.
Look at the sophistication of the Oklahoma offense. They have a new QB every year, they know where to go with the ball.
I also don't think this is a two year thing. Book struggled with this stuff last season as well. Saw it against Pitt, USC, Clemson, and every game this season. What we think is regression is just a lack of growth.
We have a serviceable QB who should be able to lead us to 11-1 given the weak schedule. We remain a 6-10 team due to what appears to be a great defense, an incredible Tight End, average at best RBs and a soft schedule sans Georgia and perhaps VA. USC lost again, everyone agrees Michigan sucks and the rest of the schedule is very weak. 11-1 could still get us in the CFP if a lot of cards fall into place.
Our challenge is Kelly is incapable of attracting the Tier 1 QBs and that is not going to change. It also appears he isnt capable of coaching them up.
Kmet could wind up being the best TE we've ever had.....which is saying a hell of a lot.
"Given the weak schedule"...That is hideous not too many college teams can boast of three tough road games, like Georgia, Michigan, Stanford...and its not ND's fault some of these teams may be down....and while we all hate scUM, thinking that game will be easy couldnt be more wrong..Its in the Big House where ND most recently is 1-7, its a big rivalry, UM is 3-1, emotions will be high, . and UM is not devoid of talent..USC is USC always talented and while they might be 3-2, their schedule to date compares favorably with just about anyone, they have played all reputable div 1 programs, unlike Bama, Ped St, Clemson and others..
Is you are a homer and providing a lot of woulda coulds shouldve's......
I dont care how good Stanford has been in the past, or USC or Michigan...
This year they are all average at best
I said we have a weak schedule this year....that is all that matters right now
Doesnt take a rocket scientist to see that.....just a homer not seeing it
Cant have it both ways here at UHND....everybody says Michigan sucks until someone notes the schedule is weak
Then they are top 5 material
That there is funny

Tyler Buchner may be the breakthrough. Though Jurkovec was certainly highly regarded.
But what they do once they play their freshman year
GA, Clemson, Alabama, OK, OSU....all have elite QBs.....
Does that clarify it better? THought it was quite obvious actually
Book can't hold any of the jockstraps......more QBs have left Alabama and GA that are all far better than Book
Why can't we get any of them?
I firmly believe it's Kelly......ND doesnt put QBs in the NFL.....plain and simple
seems like kelly is content swapping them out yearly
That's all I was trying to clarify. And suggesting that Buchner, who will be ND's highest rated QB commit under Kelly, might be the guy to break the mold. And all the QBs you mention at other schools were highly rated HS QBs. (a couple of whom didn't do much as freshman). I also think that how the QB performs once he arrives on campus probably has something to do with coaching.
IMO, this is exactly the problem. Too much thinking takes the football player out of the football player.
because he is an average QB......elite QBs eat this stuff up....he isnt elite....he isnt even Top 10 in the country
all suffered from the same indecisiveness and poor decision making late in their careers at ND. They all had plenty of ability, yet suffered from the same regression as Book.
we are actually on same page here
