He said, contrary to popular belief, that what Kelly did was not a penalty, even during the play. It's only subject to a sideline warning if it's a first offense.
Coaches are frequently "too far" onto the field. The football coaches are pikers compared to their peers in basketball.

If a USC fan wants to believe it changed the outcome of the game they are full of it.
They lost.

. . . to direct and coordinate in that situation. I have to believe at the very least, it would merit a warning and a re-kick.
From what I could gather, the play would stand but then a yardage penalty would be enforced.
I’d have a coach on the field every time I was expecting an onside kick, to coordinate and instruct. The penalty yardage is meaningless as long as you recover.

Nothing Notre Dame does is ever wrong, and everything is daisy's and lemon drops with you
You are the #1 homer on the board and should stand up and take a bow.
Is that how you go through life as well? What do you do for a living?
not exactly sure what he does for a living though.
You can’t say “he did nothing wrong.” He was on the field during a play. He shouldn’t be.
Stop the play and issue a warning?
Said you usually get the time out or they call a penalty.
They also asked him what he would have done if the ball was kicked to him. Said rather tongue-in-cheek that he would have scooped it if he had a clean shot—otherwise he would have fallen on it—just like they coach the players.
Part of the reason that so many dislike Kelly is his inability to acknowledge his mistakes. Why could he not just say "I was trying to re position the back line". It was obvious to everyone what he was doing. Heaven forbid he risk not being seen as the smartest person in the room.

marks directing players.
Wow!
Take a breath and look at the video.
Holtz and Ara were routinely on the field like that. Heck, we had 2 managers(head manager and the manager assigned to headphones) whose job was to keep Ara "contained." To this day, we still have a big chuckle how far Ara was on the field during Al Hunter's kickoff return at the Sugar Bowl. He was so far unto the field he was closer to Hunter than some of his own players. I was reminded by one of my bro managers that we actually teased Ara during player timings in the following spring that we should have had a clock on him.
