I was as pissed as everyone else during the game. There are a myriad of issues with that team especially on the offensive side of the ball. In my opinion, some of it is Book and some of it is Long, but there are definitely issues.
That being said, this was a weird game where ND should have lost, but also should have won the game by 17. A lot of bad happened in bad situations to turn the game on its head. Game should have been 21-7 (worst case 17-7) at the end of the half. Book missed Kmet twice for open touchdowns and missed Claypool once. There were two picks inside the 10. A missed FG.
They are not elite, but at the same time they are better than this 1 point win. They dominated a game that they had to win in the final seconds. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen....and say what you want about Kelly as I know there are avid detractors, but this is a game that past ND teams would have lost. See Duke, NC State, Navy all from a couple years ago with Northwestern, Louisville, and Pitt years before that.
I know, you'll say I accept mediocre. I want elite, but you can't be elite with losses and Ws are better than Ls.
