they fired Willngham after 3 years. I can hear the libs now. The FSU AD is going to be called a whole bunch of unpleasant names. Now for the bad part, FSU will be very good in a short time. Bad for ND. Also, now that it appears likely that Helton is gone at USC, that's another program that is going to be very good within 2-3 years. Bad for ND.

The only mistake I have made since Holtz left is thinking that Weis was a good hire. I didn't want Davie, O'Leary, Willingham or Brian Kelly. I'll admit that I was wrong about the hire of Weis, in that I thought it was good.
O'Leary was the best actual football coach we've hired since Lou. Yeah we muffed the vetting process and then went full holier than thou in firing him, which was a huge overreaction IMO, but I believe if he had ever gotten the chance to roam our sidelines he would have had great success.
Kelly was the right hire for the time and has actually done a lot of really good things for the program overall and improved the overall talent level significantly, making this no longer the bare cupboard destination it was viewed as not too long ago (he would probably make a really good AD). Unfortunately he just isn't quite good enough at the game day stuff to compete with the big boys which is what you need to cut it here...as much as I think its time to move in another direction from him at HC, I do not think he was a bad hire.
Davie, Ty and Weis were really bad hires and its a bit concerning how those guys could have even been considered, which is why a lot of people (even those who aren't happy with Kelly) don't want to see Kelly go, because they are terrified that we'll make another hire like those three. I share this concern, but I believe this is just the risk that comes with the business of trying to be great...if you aren't willing to take the risks required to improve because you're afraid of failure then you might as well just pack it in because you've already conceded failure by not making the attempt.
A new coach could come in and win right away.
..thing is, none of us really knows who that is..we can pretend we do or look at historical trends and make educated guesses but there is no sure thing. We could hire a perceived sure thing and he falls flat, while we could hire someone everyone bemoans and he could be great.
But bottom line is, you don't find the next right guy if you stop even looking.
I remember reading a bio of him and how he had coaching success everywhere. It's not like he didn't have college coaching experience as he coached at South Carolina for four years.
The problem was, in retrospect, he was very good at designing an offense and playcalling, but not much else. It will never happen, but I'd like to see him come back as O-coordinator and for Kelly to stay out of his way.

Hopefully his agent is reaching out to Tallahassee as we speak.

Stan played basketball and graduated from ND. He cut his teeth moving up the ranks in the AD athletic department before landing at FSU. He now works for the NCAA.
