I’m so fed up with the state of this program. It’s obvious they don’t care as much as we do. We are battered woman in a dis-fn-functional relationship. This university is letting its fans and players down and don’t care one bit as long as tourists keep tapping the sign and Money keeps rolling in. ESPN uses us as a joke prop.... and they are right. We are a pretender and worthy of the punchlines. I thought Kelly would win here 10 years ago. I was wrong. The elitists won’t hire a guy named PJ, Dabo or Jimbo as it doesn’t fit the mantra of being the “Harvard of the West”. What the fuck am I supposed to do? I’ve been watching for almost 50 years. Two weeks ago I didn’t bother to watch. Saturday I didn’t bother to watch. I’ve never done that before. It doesn’t matter. I raised kids in Southern California not to be Trojan fans like their friends... for what? So they can “get used to it” Beat downs by struggling top 15 teams annually, losses to Tulsa and fn Navy? At least the Trojans will make an attempt to hire the best. We have zero chance of winning a I title with Kelly no matter how many Dukes and Bowling Greens we beat. any reasonable fan can see that. When USC hires a decent coach we will no longer be in the “conversation “ for a playoff spot. Swarbrick can go Fuck himself. Kelly will become the winningest coach in program history twice.... once and then again 12 wins later. It makes me want to puke. I’m close to checking out after a lifetime fandom. I’m sure the Don Millers of the world will tell me good riddance and question my loyalty proving they have no understanding of what we were or of what we are capable of being with decent fn leadership. F them. The program is in purgatory.... they win enough to justify doing nothing and incapable of winning the only prize that matters.

For starters, the teams in 88 and 89 (along with 1990) were expected to take anyone out. Even that 1989 Miami game was winnable at least 2 out of every three times. The fact that the 89 team suffocated a #1 Colorado 21-6 shows how good that team really was. There was never any doubt that we would crush the #1 team that year. When Lou told them that Colorado was living a lie, he meant it.
Were there some games that were closer than they should have been? Yes. Stanford in 1989, Pitt in 1988, and a few others, but in the end, the teams did what they were supposed to do.
Back in those days, you had a handful of truly elite teams, such as ND, Miami, Florida State, Michigan, USC, and a few others.
The teams in 2017-2019 are good, even very good at times, but not elite like the Holtz ear teams were. None of these teams could be realistically expected to take out an Alabama, Clemson, or Ohio State team in its current form. We would have to rely on a lot of divine intervention on our behalf, and some divine wrath directed at the opposing team.
Also, the teams in 2017 didn't play nearly as much of a murderer's row schedule that Holtz's teams did. While these current teams do have some quality wins, I still don't see a signature win that has everyone whooping and hollering in joy.

the 28-5 '87-'89 run is purely coincidental

The best team in the country , beat 7 of the final top AP 18 teams..
The bowl win over number one was also classic.
Kelly beats the trash that now inhabits the ND schedule, and gets creamed by anyone in the top 10.
(And 5 in a row after the loss to Miami in 1987.)
The home win was the 1988 victory over Miami that helped secure the National Championship.
I was there. I know what is real "magic"...and what is not...

we weren't playing these watered down schedules back then.

It's harder to win on the road, this you have to be a better team to do it.
Why do you think Kelly has so many wins at home, but when he goes on the road...ehh, not so much. If Kelly were playing the kind of schedules Holtz was he would be struggling at home as well, but these schedules are just watered down enough that he can win most of them at home (unless a big boy comes to town) then when he goes on the road he can still at least competitive (unless we visit a big boy).
He is saying ND under Holtz was better on the road than ND under Holtz at home. It isn't a Kelly comparison.

Don't know that I agree Holtz was better on road than he was at home...as I recall most of the heartbreakers under Holtz occurred on the road, maybe I'm remembering wrong but I don't think so...I definitely know the games that prevented him from having 3 NCs were on the road @Miami in '89 and at BC in '93.
The BC loss was at home.
