LSU HAS BEAT 4, I repeat FOUR top 10 teams THIS year and Kelly has won just ONE in 10 years. ENOUGH SAID!
leaders:
- Tim Brown, 7th all-time in receptions, 7th all-time in yards.
- Golden Tate, 59th all time in receiving
- Jerome Bettis, 8th all time in rushing
- Ricky Watters, 24th all time in rushing
- Montana, 20th all-time passing yards (though that's not how you measure his greatness).
Granted, recent grads don't have a chance to make a mark in the all-time lists. But for the past decade, other than O-linemen, we haven't had players at this level. Our running backs, if they make an NFL team, are down the depth chart. Same with receivers. The last ND quarterback to succeed in the NFL would be either Bueurlein or Rick Mirer if you look only at his "Rookie of the Year" season.
Holtz's teams had enough talent to bench an all-timer like Watters for disciplinary reasons and not miss a beat against top flight competition. We just ain't there.

He beat #10 Michigan State in 2012. They finished unranked.
He beat #8 Oklahoma in 2012. They finished #15.
He beat #7 Stanford last year. They finished unranked.
If you say the 2012 games were forfeited, you can say he has only beaten one.
His "signature win" is against a team that finished at #15. 10 years of data show that he can not motivate and win against quality competition. More often than not he can not even compete.

...you can probably do the math on where/ if those LSU teams were ranked.
or final ranking...I think final ranking is the better indicator while ranking at time is much easier to look up.
Off top of my head, I believe the only team Kelly ever beat who finished Top 10 was that 12-1 MSU team that handed tosu their first/ only loss.
ranking:
Kelly has beaten 2 final top 10’s. Stanford in 2012 who finished #7 and the Michigan State team who you mentioned that finished #3.
So you could certainly say that that Michigan State game is actually Kelly’s signature win
By contrast, Kelly has lost 12 times to teams that have finished the season ranked 10 or better, making him 2-12 by that measure
