Can someone explain when (if ever) we can stand in for an ACC team? I read an article that we could be opposite an ACC in the Orange Bowl, but not that we could fill the ACC's role, even though the ACC is historically bad and may end the season with only 1 team in the Top 25.
I appreciate the info/knowledge.
If we’re within two games of any ACC team we can take their spot in any ACC affiliated bowl game with the exception of the Orange Bowl. The ACC is guaranteed a spot in the Orange. We can still get a spot in the Orange as long as SEC and Big X don’t qualify. (They qualify if after filling their spots in the CFP, if applicable, and then the Sugar and Rose, respectively, they still have a team ranked higher than ND in the final playoff rankings.
The Sugar and Rose have guaranteed conference affiliations and ND cannot play in those games. Normally, ND could take an at large bid in the Peach or Fiesta but this year they are CFP semis, so they are not available. That leaves only the Cotton this year as the only game available for at large bids. One spot is guaranteed to the highest rank Group of 5. That leaves only one at large spot available.
That is why an 10-2 ND will not be in a New Years Six game this year.
The fact that the highest rated G5 team is obligated to go to a NY6 bowl means that there will always be a lineup of teams vying for that spot in the Committee's rankings even if not a single one of them is actually among the 25 best teams as is the case this year. The tie in should read that the highest ranked G5 team should go to the Cotton if and only if they are undefeated. Otherwise none should be anywhere near the top 25 unless they have already convincingly beaten a P5 top 25 team and demonstrated that they clearly belong there. Only having 20 or so ranked P5 teams anymore is not a good look for college football.
Memphis, Cincinnati, Boise State, SMU, and App State are probably on par with a dialed in Boston College team.
an ACC opponent, and the odds right now are that it would be a re-match against VA or Va Tech. Yawn.

Notre Dame – eligible for ACC-contracted bowls. However, Notre Dame cannot be selected by an ACC bowl if there is an eligible ACC team with two or more wins than Notre Dame. For example, a 9–3 Duke team must be chosen over a 7–5 Notre Dame team. Notre Dame was ultimately selected to the 2014 Music City Bowl and 2018 Citrus Bowl (following the 2017 season) in lieu of other ACC teams. Notre Dame did not take an ACC spot in 2015 and 2018 as they earned New Year's Six bids, and was not eligible for a bowl in 2016. Notre Dame can play in Orange Bowl no more than twice over 12-year span, beginning in 2014, but has no limit on playing in any other New Year's Six bowls if selected (Notre Dame has yet to make an Orange Bowl in that time).
Historically one would say Miami, Florida State and Virginia Tech have been very strong programs.....just not in the recent past.....
Many on here wouldnt want you writing it off as a weak dick conference since 5 of our games every year come from this conference right? And we only get Clemson every 2-3 years?
"be careful what you wish for".
to prove ourselves......
(no message)
to have the opportunity.
That said, I no longer want to do so with a coach who is unable to properly prepare for these types of games...and waits for the ass-whipping to "flip the switch" instead of flipping the switch before the game...which is his job.
Michigan truly a debacle but whoever scored first in that game had a big advantage with the weather affecting come back possibilities. I realize both teams had the same conditions but a dumb play by us really hurt and if we have the ball at the 25 or 30 at 0-0 that changes many things.
You always have an excuse....
We were gifted continuation of a TD drive to make it 7 -17 in the third Quarter and then fell back into our malaise. Maybe in the weather you aren't going to win that game at that point...you don't curl up and let the other team thrash you.
Georgia, the D performed well. Offense went into a shell for nearly three quarters of the game. I didn't really see us as prepared on one side of the ball.
I'm being facetious, of course, Freely admit I have no idea.
