Lest this earlier discussion be lost into the nether region of UHND, I thought I'd get my pound of flesh before the toilet bowl sewage is released:
1. It's amusing that the consensus here is that Kelly is mediocre at best, yet many of these same folks want ND to go to one of these mediocre, crappy bowl games.
2. The "extra weeks of practice argument": please cite the evidence that the "extra practice" translates into enhanced performance the following season. Also, if 8 months of practices are good, 9 months must be better!
3. The "recruits won't come here if we don't go to toilet bowls" argument: please cite a single recruit who didn't choose a program because it turned down a toilet bowl bid. There are actually many examples of programs turning down bids. For instance, ND's projected toilet bowl opponent this season, Oklahoma State, turned down a bid last season. Which recruits were turned off by this? How did turning down the toilet bowl bid hurt the program in any way? Pick any of the programs over the past decade that turned down toilet bowl bids and explain how they were hurt in any way by staying home. Evidence. Take your time.
These arguments you make are based upon what you heard or read someone else say, and like most things you believe, you say and write them without giving much or any effort to find evidence that they're actually true.
Until 1968, ND didn't go to bowls. After that and until Faust, they didn't go go toilet bowls. drawing the line at the Gator Bowl. When the awful Faust stunk up the joint, they changed and started to go to toilet bowls under the mistaken impression that this would help save face.
I'm loving the rationalizations for going to crappy bowl games from the same folks who lament that ND isn't great anymore. Yeah boy, the Camping World Bowl is a key building block in getting back to greatness! Gotta go! Potential recruits would say, "Hey, I noticed you turned down an invite to the Camping World Bowl! I'm moving on!"

But not me...so if I’m not a dumb millennial, am I a brilliant X’er?
Didn't you ever watch any of "Reality Bites?"

Does American Samoa host a bowl? That might be a nice trip for the lads.

Bah, humbug!

It did wonders for both programs this season.
At best ND should allow the players to choose if they want to play in lesser bowls.

The players want to go to one and the coaches like the extra practices. It’s not all about us poor suffering fans. It rewards a (maybe) meaningless ten win season, with an equally meaningless reward bowl.
The stars align quite well

I want them to go to the toilet bowl so I can watch them play again. I enjoyed watching our guys play against Duke and Bowling Green and I'd enjoy watching them play against Oklahoma State. I seriously doubt turning down a bowl bid would hurt with recruits, but I'm certain that accepting one won't either.
You're supposed to plaster unsupported assertions you've heard others make and then get your nose bent out of shape and downvote the crummy ne'er dow well who wants to take away this veritable cotton candy from our fragile players!

You can opt out completely but you can’t say we’ll accept a Cotton Bowl but not the Liberty Bowl.
And OSU won the 2018 Liberty Bowl so what bid did they turn down?
Still no evidence!

A team likely to win 10 games that no one is arguing played like shit against Michigan, plays one more game? I mean, if you can’t stand ND football that much, don’t watch. If you like to watch their games, watch them - I don’t understand what gets some of your panties wadded up over bowl games.
I will ask a third time: which potential recruit has ever moved on from considering a program because the program turned down a toilet bowl bid? When has the "extra practice" translated into greater success the following season? Why is 9 months of practice better than 8? (Man, the NFL is missing the boat on that, huh?) Where are all the sobbing players on the teams over the years that turned down toilet bowl bids? How in your little minds does expecting greatness again involve accepting bids to things like the "Camping World Bowl?"

Maybe call Mike Gundy and he can tell you about all the sobbing OK St. players after they turned down a toilet bowl bid last season?
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhocking!

Pretty much for all the same reasons you just listed...and I agree with you about not going to crap bowls.
You know that, already.
or at least break your hands to prevent you from typing idiocy.
I thought you were going to do something about your anger issues, too?
Oh, I know: the one who couldn't produce any evidence!

Although downviting is profoundly pussyish.
Any evidence that extra practices in December translates into more victories the following year? How about a recruit who turned down a school because they refused a bid to a toilet bowl?

Where are all these sobbing players after teams turn down bowl bids? Inquiring minds want to know!

Haven't heard of that one, bud. Is that where ND is headed if it lays an egg in Palo Alto? Who would be the opponent, then? Troy State? Hey: more practices!
