It's likely that if LSU, OSU, and Clemson win championship games...and so do Oklahoma and Utah...that one Power 5 conference is going to be really pissed.
How would the committee choose between a 12-1 Oklahoma and a 12-1 Utah? Both are probably deserving...and why force that choice?
I'm assuming that Georgia is going to lose to LSU...and the committee won't choose Georgia over Oklahoma or Utah.
Conf champs of Big 5 conferences get in.
Next 3 at-large.
While I agree with the premise of an 8 or 16 team playoff as that will definitely grab the best teams and is the most fair, as an independent, we could be left in a lurch trying to schedule games. The current champion will likely play 15 games (unless it was ND, we'd only play 14). That's a 12 game season, conference championship, and two game playoff. That's a lot of games at the college level.
I played at Grand Valley and was there during the transition from Coach Beck to Coach Kelly. Division II has a 16 game playoff, but the regular season only consists of 11 games with no byes. The season rolls straight into the playoffs with no break, so you end up with 15 games straight. Translating that to FBS, do the teams give up their regular season byes? Does everyone have a bye week before the playoffs? But the most important issues for ND are I don't think you can play a 12 game regular season with a 16 team playoff so where do we get our opponents?. Do you play 11 or as few as 10? As the number of regular season games shrink, do Power 5 mega conferences have any non-conference room? If they do, are they going to play ND or a "warm up" team? Another very important issue is the playoff would at least start if not be a couple games in during finals. For those schools who actually require their players to attend classes and take finals - like ND, that can be a real disadvantage.
Don't get me wrong, I do not like the current format, but there is an opportunity cost with an 8 and especially 16 game playoff and that may be ND's independence or at least the ability to schedule some interesting games. Just my 2 cents
To work out in FBS all they have to do is increase the scholarship limit back to 100 and flush half the made for TV bowls down the toilet. An 11 game regular season might not be a bad idea either.
I agree and like their setup with the 1st round byes to the top ranked teams. My point isn't that it can't be done, it's done in every other division and it works really well. My point is solely looking at it from ND's perspective, there are some really big risks that would need to be carefully negotiated, otherwise we risk our independence or the ability to schedule any meaningful games. FCS conference size ranges from 8-14 and there isn't this division between "Power 5" and the other five or whatever their called, plus there are 13 conferences in FCS vs. the 10 in FBS, so the conferences average few teams allowing for more out of conference games (or playing up to FBS teams). So the two independents (North Dakota and Merrimack) aren't limited to half the teams in order to schedule a meaningful slate.
Again, in can certainly be done, but ND has to vehemently protect itself in any sort of setup. ND cannot make other teams play them and if you're an AD and have maybe one non-conference game, are you going to chose ND or Winthrop? I think with an eight, but especially a sixteen team tournament, the bowls necessarily die off. I'm curious if anyone thinks that type of setup puts any pressure on the mega conferences to split back up into smaller conferences and eliminate their conference championship game?
would be the best thing that could happen for fans but there is so much money and corruption in the NCAA that it probably could never happen.
FBS is the only major sport that does not have a real championship. The ADs want to keep it that way.

Should probably have minor league teams affiliated with schools where NFL hopefuls play for 4 years unfettered by any school responsibilities.
Those who earn enough off their likeness or get NFL deals are on their own. Those who do not pan out can then exercise their scholarship and go study if they choose afterward.
I realize that is unworkable...but so is where we are headed now...
At this point, LSU and Ohio State are clearly above the rest. Clemson has played a wimpy schedule—I expect they will get slaughtered by anyone they meet in the playoffs

So many teams, so few games (especially since everyone schedules a few cupcakes). Not a lot of commons opponents outside of conference teams.
Hard to say what's an impressive win vs not an impressive win.
Expansion seems like the only practical thing to do, but it will take awhile for them to see the light.
I never understood this "Power Five" and "Group of Five" thinking. Last time I checked, all are full members of FBS. So let all the conference champions in, plus 6 at large teams.
them would be somewhat close. When you get to 16, I don't think so, plus you want to keep the importance of the regular season.
What ever team makes it in as No. 4, either Utah or Oklahoma will get waxed in round 1. No reason to expand it yet.
