Over at footballscoop.com, which does a nice job tracking coaching changes at all levels, from D1 head coaches to D3 assistants, there are articles quoting Mike Norvell and Matt Rhule about what makes them successful coaches. They note Norvell has had 25 assistants hired away the past four years, second only to Saban. Both Norvell and Rhule discuss the importance of the head coach leading and empowering the assistants, and that it is more important to have a well run operation from top to bottom, as done by Belichick and Tomlin and Saban and Swinney, than to hire a head coach for X's and 0's. That sounds like why you need to have extensive success as a D1 college head coach to be successful here at ND. "Decided schematic advantage" ain't gonna cut it. You need a vision and to know how to implement it top to bottom.
