Sanford seemed to be fine as the OCINO (offensive coordinator in name only) for us in 2015 - 2016. That level of experience wasn't enough for him to be considered as head coaching material, though.
A few years of work as a bona fide offensive coordinator should help him when it comes to taking that next step.
