Link: Derrick Mayes: Notre Dame Football's Most Underrated Receiver?
In my memory he was the best ND ever had at tracking and adjusting to the ball in the air. Fuller is a close second.
Wasn't he a highly coveted WR coming out of high school? If I'm not mistaken, he was part Vinny Cerrato's final recruiting classes.
When I think of an underrated Notre Dame wide receiver, I'm thinking of guys like Adrian Jarrell, Raki Nelson, Malcolm Johnson, Matt Shelton or Robby Toma.
Mayes could have been the best wide receiver in program history with a better QB and offense to play in.
Imagine Mayes in Weis's offense or in Kelly's offense.
He was still great while he was at Notre Dame, but he would have put up monster numbers. When people rattle off their top WR's in program history though, he's mentioned far less than he should be.
I'm still upset we didn't get to see a Mayes/ Randy Moss WR duo in 1995.
Ron Powlus is probably still upset as well.
Derrick Mayes had an ability to wrestle away a ball from many contested catches. I still remember the Snow Bowl of 1992, against Penn State, where Rick Mirer threw a ball right into the numbers of a Penn State defender, and as the guy was about to secure the ball, Mayes snatched that ball out of his hands.
That play alone turned the tide of the game, as that Penn State defense was wreaking havoc on our offense the whole game.
