Link: Notre Dame Needs Brian Kelly to Step Up Recruiting of Lorenzo Styles
He did a FaceTime with the scUM coaches. So what? A lot of these kids do shit like this. Hell, our biggest (literally) recruit, Blake Fisher, plays Madden on a regular basis with a member of the Purdue staff.
On a pay site where I'm a member...one of the staff spoke with Styles and his response was "I'm all good with ND". Does that mean he won't flip? Who knows...
As far as Kelly's recruiting efforts with this kid, what more can he do right now other than FaceTime or texts? He surely can't visit him.
Couple things:
1. I believe you are referring to the Carter Karells interview with Styles (or Tom Loy/Prister). I heard the same thing, which was, at this time I dont think I will cheat on the Irish (take any other visits) because at the moment I am good with the Irish for now.
you don't have to be English major to read between the lines, which are he is as soft of a commitment as we have in this class.
2. What else can Kelly be doing? Completely fair question, and I don't know the answer. Fortunately for all of you I am not paid to have the answer. and Unfortunately for all the ND faithful, other programs/recruiters ARE paid to figure it out, and they are. Michigan has landed two Top 250 kids in the last week, Ohio State has landed 3 (and a 4- star transfer). Clemson is making in roads with our #1 priority recruit #1 APB Will Shipley. So what else can he be doing? He can be doing whatever these other programs are doing. We are trending WAY DOWN, and other programs (PSU is another) are trending up. Kelly and Co. are paid to have answers for every scenario and his top counterparts are figuring it out.
3. If this continues we are in trouble: Specifically they absolutely need to land Rocco Spindler (especially with Landon Tengwell choosing PSU over ND). They also need to work on Wyatt Milium (chose WV over ND). And there are a couple swing lineman in between they need to win. And of course they better win Will Shipley.
ALL OF THESE KIDS ARE TRENDING TO OTHER SCHOOL RECENTLY.
FIGURE IT OUT!
of which I've been a member for over 10 years. These guys are almost always spot on.
As far as the recruits...Tengwell was a PSU lean for a LONG time. We put our best foot forward, but this current crisis got in the way and the kid picked PSU. Spindler is still in play.
I think Kelly and the staff are doing everything they can to keep in contact with these kids. I don't think a recruit that FaceTimes with other coaches is a big deal right now. Once this crisis is over, I'm sure the staff will hit the road full speed. Go Irish.
Those alleged missteps in the recruitment of Washington WR commit Jalen McMillian & OSU S commit Lathan Ransom (they BOTH said they never heard from Brian Kelly) were disturbing.
Then Kelly comes out and basically says "some things have changed and we now expect to be in the Top 5 every year". Nice- perfect- people make mistakes and great leaders learn from them.......
THEN there were reports that Deion Colzie basically never heard from Notre Dame after he committed. There are obviously two sides to every story- this may or may not be completely true... but BOY is that an alarming developments after all that we heard from BK about changing things up.
You make this mistake with Will Shipley (it may be too late- Clemson is sinking their teeth in) and you are going to lose what would be the crown jewel of this class!

then you can kick their butts when they are yours. No ifs, ands, or butts about that!
this is what recruiting is.
Almost EVERY TOP TEAM SELLS OUT and kisses the asses of the top players. Because the top players are what it takes TO WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.
Its very simple- there is nothing hard or confusing about this.
BK is Holtz and the ND allure isnt what it used to be. YOU NEED TO WORK YOUR BUTT OFF to land these guys.
Or we can continue to be average.... i dont get why the coaching staff struggle with this so much.

Khaki perfected his techniques with the Stanford cheerleaders.
And it WASN'T that close.
Would he get better position coaching at tosu and a legit shot at a NC? I think the answer is yes.
I hope he does come to ND. But who could blame him if he went elsewhere?
