Here is the list:
1. Mike Elston
That's it. That is the list.
Elston has a formula and it absolutely works.
Find the guys you want, regardless or rating. LOAD the roster with the same kind of guys across the D Line. Mold them and let Balis do his thing. They are all 2.5 year starters, they all basically play, they all develop from Year 1 to Year 4, and they are solid- to- above average players at ND. Most are pretty productive alone, but the strength is the sum of all parts.
The formula absolutely works, and because of this Elston deserves our trust. Sit back and let Mike do his thing, I promise its going to work out fine EVERY single time.
After that... I don't know who to trust in recruiting, and that is including BK.
I would say honorable mention of coaches I'm starting to at least trust somewhat is Lance Taylor. But here is the deal with Taylor:
He landed EXACTLY what we needed in the 19 class (Speed) and that comes in the form of one Chris Tyree. Say what you want about Tyree's size or durability, but when it clicks on the field for him its just going to look different. He is THAT fast and THAT explosive that for the first time in years (probably to the tune of 7-12 touches a game) its going to look much different on the field at the RB position.
That was a fantastic land for Taylor & ND. But it was ONE player.
Now, he obviously found his guy in the 2020 class in Will Shipley . I tip my cap to Taylor because by all accounts he has done EVERYTHING he could possibly do to land Shipley. But in recruiting the best of the best you always have to worry about the Big Dawgs.. and in this case its Dabo and the Clemson Tigers. Typically (look at the data) Dabo gets what Dabo wants.
So this is going to be a battle.
My point is: if Taylor whiffs here there is really no backup plan. Having no contingency plan is something I am ok with if this is what it takes (100% full attention to 1 kid) to land a player like Shipley. That is basically the formula that helped Taylor land Tyree (he was the only RB we were really recruiting & we promised him we wouldn't sign a single other back should he commit).
But IF he misses, it makes Taylor a 1 hit wonder. We don't need 1 hit wonder recruiters, we need sure things.
You land Shipley and it will have a dramatic effect on ND being a true National Title contender. You miss, and you are in a world of hurt.
Thoughts? Agree? Disagree?
Let's hear it....
