I still don't understand why ND is in on another RB. Unless Tommy/Tom/Tommy has decided to implement a Bo Schembechler offense, I don't see how there are enough touches to split between this number of RBs. Is someone leaving?

If Taylor likes him, then why not?
The RB depth for 2020 doesn't look very deep.
Who will be the stater? Smith, Armstrong? Who will provide relief as a backup? Kyren Williams, True Freshman Chris Tyree?
Outside the CBs, the RB is the most concerning group heading into 2020.
ND has no clear cut running back depth chart. He certainly could crack the rotation. Also, I think we will use a lot of 2 back sets this year...1 of those backs will be more of a slot WR hybrid such as Jafar, Avery and Tyree.
Armstrong went from being a thickly built WR with track champion speed to an RB that doesn't move well with the added pounds. Not really the transition Prosise made.
Think BK wanted Kyren Williams to be ND's version of LSU's Edwards-Helaire but maybe he's just not adding the strength the way CEH did.
Flemister showed flashes last year but still was a bit raw and not sure if he added any strength over the off season.
Jahmir Smith looks to have the frame to carry the load and enough athletic ability but he might be the only one on the roster who can.
Incoming Chris Tyree won't be the workhorse though he should see a lot of touches.
Now Trevor Speights has 4yrs in a program like Stanford so he'll come in built to play. Has some experience with Coach Taylor. Could help mentor new and current backs whether he wants that job or not. Just having him on the roster helps that. Players can watch and just learn from his reps. Not much college tape to watch but his HS tape is impressive. 10.9 sprinter with some with wiggle and power, 4th all-time rusher in TX history... He would've been a good pickup for ND out of HS. Even if BK gets Shipley (deciding before May 10??) next year it'll be nice to have Speights on board SO LONG it doesn't scare a talent like Shipley away.
That being said...I think if Speights is really thinking NFL next year he should probably go somewhere to be showcased. Rice might not be the NFL launch pad but he'd most likely be the top dog and have a boatload of touches.
Nobody is ina better position to know how good he is, and how much he can contribute than the guy who used to be the Stanford RB coach and is now the ND RB coach.
should fit in perfectly!
