Boise State when we swooped in and got him. Did we miss out on a another top rated QB or was he just meant to be backup?
Kizer still had 2 years of eligibility when Book was a frosh. Wimbush had 4. Jurkovec was 2 classes behind him.
The expectation was never that Book would be a 3-year starter who would carry the team. It happened because of attrition and failed development.
year then they probably screwed up again. Clark and Powlus III are recruited as depth guys - high floor/low ceiling. Occasionally you’ll find one that hits and ends up surprising people but...
We should all respect Book for what he accomplished but he didn't exactly beat anyone out to be the starter. Wimbush was supposed to be the guy.... and then he wasn't. Jurkovek was supposed to be the next guy.....and then he wasn't. Book survived inept qb development. Kelly puts more cache is a qb who is a game manager than one who can win games against the best teams. Just like at other key positions, he plays the guy who make the least mistakes, rather than one who can win games in an instant.
Book is a classic, high floor, low ceiling guy. We beat the teams we should have when he was qb which is "progress" but off of as low bar. We also lost to every team we should have. The highlight of Book's career is when ND beat the 2nd team defense and freshman qb of Clemson.
Even if Kelly had used his "faster" receivers, Book doesn't have the arm talent and can't throw receivers open that the best qbs have. That isn't a rip on Book, just a matter of what his skill set is. Fact is, I doubt Book would have started for any top 15 Power 5 team this year expect ND.
Kelly's offense is incredibly basic and his selection of the least experienced OC in all of Power 5 football illustrates indicates that. He doesn't have a clue about how to run an offense to compete with high skill position players and his poor recruiting at those positions demonstrates that. Just like at qb, he plays the guys who make the least mistakes, rather than the guys who can win games in an instant.
Get used to it. He doesn't have a clue and he is content to go 10-2 and get blown out against the high end teams because, well, because everyone else does. His next key coaching selection is likely to prove just that.
Winbush to PJ seemed to be the progression they wanted on paper.
