A 6th year senior slowed by multiple injuries, a grad transfer, a frosh and a soph
It’s a problem group
The question I have to ask is how did this position group devolve into such a problem area this year??
Correct me if I am wrong, but this years junior class recruited 5 guys who were originally targeted to play cornerback ( 2 of them 4* for whatever that 's worth)
Wilkins ends up at WR, Brown and Griffith end up at safety, Boykin, a supposed 4* never sees the field and ends up transferring, and Bracy can't hold a starting position after all the hype he received his first 2 years.
The next year 2 cornerbacks get recruited: Wallace ends up at safety, and Rutherford (probably the corner who was initially the highest rated) spends the first 2 years in the witness protection program ( I could barely even find him on the sidelines) only to transfer which further weakens this position group. Finally, Crawford, a guy with plenty of experience and played rather effectively as a corner or nickel back is moved to safety where he clearly seemed out of position all year long. I understand that guys transfer, and sometimes rankings can be subjective, and I am not at practice so I don't how it is decided as to who plays where or how much they play..
However, how the hell do you miscalculate on all the these guys to the point where you have to start a freshman who wasn't that highly recruited, and by the way his backup is now a former WR who wasn't that highly recruited, as well. Were Rivals and 247 completely wrong on all of these guys?? Is there something something lacking in how they are coached?? Does their skill set consistently not fit the defensive scheme that is being utilized?? SOMETHINGS WRONG!!
I agree with what you said regarding DBs being a problem, but it's clear the staff was only going to take 4-5 guys based on the offers that were out there. Then they changed their minds and decided to target as many as 7 (landing 6) in the month before signing day. Seems clear that they knew some guys were leaving.
