He was the passing game coordinator on defense, so, the next logical step for him would be DC. I'm assuming it is a lateral move to Texas at this point, with the idea, that he might be more promotable with exposure to another system.
As far as how good he was, he's had mixed results. He came with a reputation as a good recruiter, but other than Kyle Hamilton, he hasn't brought in a lot of star power. Even Hamilton was already a ND lean before Joseph got here.
His secondary play has been good at times, but, outside of Hamilton, was the weak link on this year's defense.
So, I think he can be replaced without much disruption. Kerry Cooks was a defensive analyst this season. He could step into that role again.
