Everybody's giving each other high fives over the acquisition of Freeman, and rightfully so.
However, his fate could rest squarely on the fate of Luke Fickell at Cincy. Already, Fickell is one of the hottest coaches around. He turned down the head job at MSU two years ago, but it's almost impossible that he'll remain at Cincy after one more big year.
His difference making QB, Desmond Ridder, has already said that he'll be back. His schedule is upgraded: at Indiana and at ND, back to back ( of course, we know that Big Game Brian would never lose to Cincy ).
Anyway, if, most likely " when ", Fickell lands a head coaching job, Marcus Freeman is a slam dunk to be the HC at Cincy. He got big money to coach at ND, but he'll get a lot more as a HC at Cincy.
So, a year from now, we could be in the search again for a new DC.
reconcilable) DC at a prominent SEC school and his unknown lieutenant, elevated to DC at ND, is now a HC in the SEC. A successful tenure at ND, however short, can get Freeman HC opportunities better than Cincinnati ... or Illinois. Given that black HCs make up about 10% of the total in the FBS where about half the players are black, if that happens that's a gain for ND, for the sport of college football and for society as a whole. (I should also note, that Freeman is not just African American, he's Asian American, his mother being Korean.)

Could be a weighted buy out.
He’s only 35 so maybe his goal is 3 years at ND and get an upper tier job. If he goes to Cincy it may actually slow him down getting an upper tier job.
Maybe BK told him he has “x” number of years left and Freeman thinks he could be a legit candidate for the job when he leaves.
Doubtful, but maybe ND really opened up the check book and he’s making more than what he’d make as Cincy HC.
None the less, if ND admin is willing to open the check book up, you take your shot at Freeman.
in a few short years and if he plays his cards well, he would be next in line at ND. It wasn’t all about the money.
He would not be in line for the HC position at LSU.
I'm sure if there was any discussion re: that issue, the response would be something like, "we'll be happy to consider you as well as all other qualified candidates."
Heck, there are no guarantees that Swarbrick will even be the AD who chooses Kelly's replacement.
You may be right, but that would be a bad move for us. The last 2 hot assistants were failures.

if they were promising that kind of money to Freeman, did ND top that?
Anyway, Freeman is on loan from Cincy for a year, and then he'll go back to be their HC.
