Link: Early Enrollee Lorenzo Styles A Must Play For Notre Dame Football
clear message from this CFP game was that we need to get the dynamic playmakers on the field and get the ball in their hands so that they could make plays. It is my guess that he learned that lesson.
As for Johnson, I'm not sure he was the explosive, dynamic player to replace Lenzy and Austin. And as the plan was always to get Lenzy back, I could see why they would keep with the two big WR's on the outside. And when you are winning and in the top 3 rankings, it's sometimes tough to change things up that are working. Plus, apparently Johnson had a hard time adjusting.
Watts is a little confusing to me, and I think he could have been given a shot and worked into the lineup. I think they could have found ways to get Tyree the ball to make plays...perhaps find ways to split Tyree out and get him the ball that way in space.
I think Styles reminds me of Devonta Smith or Chris Olave. If you look at what DeVonta Smith did against us and against OSU, many of those plays were just short little throws to get him the ball and he did everything else. I think Styles can be that kind of guy.
Regardless, there needs to be a massive upgrade in the dynamic playmakers that are on the field. I think that he should play as should Watts, Johnson, Austin and Lenzy. And Tyree and Williams. Mayer of course needs to be on the field because he is a beast and uncoverable. Get those guys out there and find ways to get them the ball in positions they can make plays. What Alabama did is the same thing Urban Meyer said he was going to do when he was coaching FL before they thrashed OSU: "I'm going to get the playmakers the ball."
ND has playmakers...that's step 1. Step 2 is getting them on the field and getting them the ball.
Do you mean Watts? And, as long as I'm being picky, it's Mayer, not Mayor.
Friend, you're just rehashing what has been written here ad nauseum. But I'll add this. Johnson not seeing much action had a lot to do with factors outside football. The kid was just having a hard time adjusting to the rigors of Notre Dame. To his credit, he stayed with it, and hopefully he has turned the corner. But as an alum, I'm proud to see Notre Dame care about the kid's well being more than treating him as a commodity to win football games.

But this is a BK team and what appears to be isn't where he usually goes with employing young talent (or talent). PJ for one example of a talent not being given any opportunity,
then there's Michael Mayer this past season given all opportunities not only in non-critical spots in a game but in very crucial spots and in crucial games as a true freshman - so too
with Chris Tyree - Johnson, not so much.
It's difficult to know the true thinking behind Kelly's moves but it's also easy to say, very perplexing. But then, if a coach doesn't have a strong armed QB at the helm, why would
he need to practice-up deep ball threats when they cannot be reached? So don't give the guy with the strong arm an opportunity so he'll either transfer (PJ) or just not show up
then your reason for using those other talents is nonexistent.
I don't make any bones about it, I've never really like Kelly's ways or him as a coach. He does know how to do the job but to me, there's something else going on in his head
and it likely has to do with control - Tommy Rees is a perfect example. Tulsa is another perfect example.
It's a constant WTF with Kelly and 2021 will be no different. Sorry to step on your carton of eggs.

That turned him into a 1st round draft choice?

His track record of managing Speed players is TERRIBLE!!

and please don't bring up Jordan Johnson. If the kid would have had his shit together, he would have played this year.
possibly. Kelly doesn't seem to like the naturally gifted players who have swag and talent. He continually doghouses them and complains they "don't know how to play the game". Yet, almost every other school in the country lets their young kids showcase their talent.

then you're delusional.
And YES we should bring up Johnson because a great coach figures out a way to acclimate a player not ostracize him. Often the field is what motivates them ... this isn't new.
But Kelly is such a stickler he don't get adjusting and finding a way to make it work. Great coaches do.

and I think the best players play. NO, you shouldn't bring up Johnson. He needs to get his shit together, mostly on the academic side of things and partially because of his attitude. He didn't adjust well to life at ND, but it looks like he might be making the required changes needed to be successful...time will tell.
AND, if Styles is good enough to get on the field as a Freshman, good for him. My hope is that the incoming freshmen push some of the older players. This might be what players like Johnson need.
has raw talent figure out how to get them the damn ball and let them showcase it. Teach them but don't handcuff them. Kelly is the master at handcuffing his natural talent.
either that or you're an old senile fool. What about "Johnson needs to get his shit together" do you not understand? The best players play the most downs.
understand.
