take the Browns to the verge of the Super Bowl twice. Had not Byner fumbled the ball heading in for the game winning touchdown, or the ridiculous prevent defense that let Elway walk down the field, they would have made a couple Super Bowls. Had them in another championship game with the Browns again in 89. The idea that his teams just sucked in the playoffs is absolutely ridiculous. That a newspaper would print that as a headline in his obituary is grotesque.
I always appreciated him. Cleveland sure could have used a coach like him the last 20 years, I'll tell you that. He always had winners and he always had class.
Godspeed Marty Schottenheimer.

It's sad to see it happen to a great football mind, or anyone for that matter.
I know that a lot of people were saying that he was still highly functional for most of the time he lived with the disease, but I can only imagine how bad the dementia really did get behind closed doors, which can be horrifying.
To rob you of your memories. Make you paranoid and often time violent. And it's a fast moving disease, as well. Fuck dementia and cancer...
he was in a Nursing home and he and another "inmate" tried to plan how to escape. It was like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, very sad yet oddly funny story. He was functioning though at 91, ate all his food, dressed himself, did not shit pants too often but he would wander off and get lost because he loved to walk. He was basically killed by the hospital after being put there for being "too excitable" and punching the same guy he planned the escape with. They gave him drug which absolutely put him in a fog and causing him to be a zombie not swallowing. I got him to swallow when I visited as the drug was finally wearing off, and the head nurse was thrilled thinking he would be going back to the Nursing home the next day. Well guess what the idiots gave him the same drug and he was done. She confessed to me that they should not have given him that drug. The next day two doctors and two other hospital workers were in a room with us explaining how they handled the situation as best they could. Gee do you think they screwed up? My brothers were not as upset as I was because he did not remember much but physically he definitely had some time left, and was well like at the Nursing home.

In life then go to the other extreme and not know anyone, couldn’t eat on her own. Me and my brother have an agreement. If we become like that, pillow over the face. I’m not living like that.
