Valparaiso University has ditched "Crusaders" as their long and storied nickname. Their admin caved big time to the few. How soon will "they" come after "Fighting Irish"? Do our trustees, alums, and administration have the courage to say absolutely not, the name stays? Ten years ago I would have said no chance ND changes their nickname. Now I say, never say never.

“Sinn Fein Amhain”. The Bugger Off’s would be a great name!
That's what I always thought. If so, that isn't anything to change.

Can see the headlines already..."Another Turnaround by The 69'ers!"

For some reason I remember that it was at a train station or something and they were being harassed. And some reporter wrote an article about it and called them Notre Dame's fighting Irishmen. Then the team took up the moniker as a badge of honor. Don't remember what book I read that in. I know there are multiple stories about the origins of the name though.
but they cared enough to send their best. That's what my Irish grandma use to say, God rest her soul...

Our lads from then took exception to the planned klavern in their fair city and went down to the train station to greet the miscreants as they arrived. The klan didn’t fare well.

Patrick Wagon is more dignified.
state over and over that "everybody knows" and "no one has ever seen anything like it".
A man of wisdom and truth will not use any of those expressions.............ever.

Though the Valpo situation is being pitched as “the admin caving” to a “bitching” minority, the Valpo nickname change came only after a long discussion that ended with the faculty, the student senate, and the alumni association asking for the change. Change happens. ND wasn’t always the “Fightin’ Irish” and Valpo wasn’t always the “Crusaders.” Nothing wrong with a change, as far as I’m concerned. Or maybe I’m wrong and nicknames like Nebraska Bugeaters should have been sacrosanct.

The Irish are the blacks of Europe, Dubliners are the blacks of Ireland, and the North Siders are the blacks of Dublin … so say it loud — I’m black and I’m proud! Based on this, we should be fine.
My understanding is that the nickname was changed to Crusaders hastily in the 1940s from “Uhlans,” which was ditched due to its Germanic military connotations that were unpopular at the time. Isn’t this move supported by Valpo students and alumni anyway? I read that the student body, faculty, and alumni association all sought the change.
It's hard to say exactly how many alums, students, and whoever else complained. It may have been a minority crying about it for all we know. Some alums have cut off their donations because of this. Again, not sure how many "some" is. Don't even know what their isssue is. Don't care. That's their problem to deal with. I'm just asking and wondering about our beloved "Fighting Irish". I'm sure if we search, we too can find students, alums and faculty bitching about the name. It only takes a few to rile things up.
it's DOES fit the stereotype. Most of my ND stuff has IRISH, but very little has Fighting Irish. I do realize that the Fighting Irish is the official moniker. Of course, it was Figthing Irish for one game a few years back - at least on the cups in the stadium.

Diligent in protecting the brand?!?!
Many people are devastated by hurricanes. I'm actually surprised there isn't a movement on this...yet...

Though in the last 30 or so years, "Irish Curse" seems more appropriate.

As do most sophisticated subalums.
And there are plenty of them.
“Golden Domers” is generally used by
riff raff subalums.
But you can call yourself whatever you like, not that there's anything wrong with it.
The vast majority of Alums and sophisticated subalums would find your assertion bizarre and classless.
Again, you can refer to yourself however you fancy.
But the brand needs to connect with "normal" people, and especially recruits. Some 18-year-olds may want to be "Domers", but it's just not ideal, IMO.
