3-0 start to the season, ranked #8, beating up on weak opposition so far, but the ACC schedule will be brutal.
A special player to watch, sophomore Pat Kavanaugh, wearing the same #51 that Matt Kavanaugh wore as an ND All-American.
How good is the younger Kavanaugh? Through three games, he has 19 assists. In 2019, in a 16-game season, ND was led by two players with 13 assists apiece all year. In 2018, in a 15-game season, the Irish were led by two players with 14 assists each. In 2017, Ryder Garnsey had 23 assists in 14 games. Pat K is on pace to top that Saturday in his fourth game of the season.
In short, the Irish have not had a top-tier distributor like this in a long time. He is a delight to watch.
The big challenge: even as a top ten team, the Irish appear to be the 5th best team in the ACC. Duke is beyond loaded. UNC has played like a possible number one team. Virginia won the NCAA title in 2019 and has lots of stars from that team still on the roster but has started conference play 0-2. Syracuse was upset by Army but has looked terrific since.
Should be a fun ACC season. The Irish should be 4-0 after playing Cleveland State this weekend. Go 3-3 in the ACC and they will hold their top ten ranking and maybe even move up.
Irish defense is excellent. Transfer goalie Liam Entenmann could be an All-American. The problem? The other ACC teams all have dynamite offenses and have scored 20-plus goals at least once this season, and not necessarily against weaklings.
Should be an interesting season. Irish have a chance for a special year if the defense can hold and the offense can keep building around Kavanaugh.
