I'm not saying Rees is an offensive mastermind yet, but I really feel like he figured that one out. Knew the whole time he was QB that they could have handed the damn ball off and ran over most of the teams they played. That's where it starts. Ohio State gets it. They run over 10 out of 12 teams they play every year. The other two or three games they open it up with stuff no one's ever seen. But it starts with kicking some ass and running over teams. If you can't do that, you can't belong. It's that simple. And ND has the horses to get it done just like OSU.
You have to match the physicality. We did, for the first time since Holtz, what Holtz called "putting a Riddell on somebody and being the most physical team in the country until the whistle blows." We did that this year and we need to keep doing it. Add the dynamic weapons on the outside (which we have on campus already) and we're there.
I'm so happy to see this.

and his RB's can also receive out of the backfield.
So believing that nonsense is just what he wants others to do.
His teams play tough D, Run the ball and play the RPO game.
Kelly's game has been, throw (with out a decent QB) and lose big games.
Run the ball and use the pass = win games. 50/50 balance or there about.
Also, knowing what the other team is good at on D should help decide witch game is best suited on any given Saturday.
ND having a potent Run game only opens up that pass game - and if one of these QB's can toss it farther than 10 yds
(and BK puts the talented RC on the field practiced in the catching the long ball) ND can start to score at will.
Some teams defend the run well, so maybe a little more pass less run and ... you get the drift.
Run the damn ball but be efficient to very good at both run and pass.

big chunck plays and scores? And then, what was the % balance between run and pass plays used?
The amount of yds for pass can be a bit deceiving.
No one here is calling for just a run game - If we were, we'd be wanting Option football.
And the issue is not throwing predominantly, let alone exclusively. The issue is about scoring points, as many and as quickly as possible and opposing that to Kelly's expressed "ND DNA": play good defense, run the ball and control the clock -- the very things Saban said won't win anything now. If you can get explosive plays in the running game and score points quickly, fine. If you can use the run, or threat of run, to get explosive plays passing, fine. RPOs are intended to take away the defense's numbers advantage (optioning off of the pre-snap alignment of defenders, on whether the numbers favor the wide receivers, or post-snap off a strong safety or middle linebacker) and enable both. Elite modern offenses are going to score against you. Running the ball to control the clock and wear down defenses will not win at an elite level. It's a dead formula.
As for Alabama's offense, Sarkisian can explain: Sark Clinic
You're assuming far too much about the scoring drives. The balance of attack is what you're looking for and not the stuff in garbage time.
The Tide have a great run game with tremendous RB's - they also have great WR's and usually of late, a QB who can get the ball to them -
unlike ND. Now suddenly, ND has a couple of decent RB's and a ton of WR's - the only thing missing is a QB who can get it downfield and
a OC who can design plays and an attack each week to score points.
No one said anything about running the clock down - though it's always a good thing when winning in a close game. And stop with the RPO
lesson. You miss read my post is what you're doing.
with misreading.
I'm not assuming anything. Alabama was in the top 5 in every category from 10+ yds to 90+ yds plays: 2020 National Leaders Long Scrimmage Plays but averaged only 5.0 yds rushing per carry, identical to ND. (If "the tide have a great run game" with fewer yds/g and with the identical yds per carry as ND, I guess that means ND had a great run game.)
What does "balance of attack" mean? The balance of the attack should be determined by the defense; that's what RPOs allow and that is why they have changed the game and that's why the old formula, as Saban said, won't win anything.
It is Brian Kelly who has said that solid defense, running the ball and controlling the clock is ND's DNA.
