I noticed he didn't put up any stats in the spring game. Not sure if he even played. Whatever the reason for not getting him on the field last season will forever be a mystery.
It's tough to see one of these rare 5 star, and desperately needed skill position talents wasted.

is a prima donna like he may be he will show up in a bad way too.
Johnson is leaving b/c he was the 6th WR at best on the team going into fall. Sometimes the recruiting services get it wrong. If he was truly a 5 star talent he would have beaten out Lenzy, Keys, Davis, and/or Wilkins this spring. He didn't and is leaving. The only reason it's notable is his recruiting ranking.
game breaker at WR at ND regardless of number of stars.

Maybe it was a bad fit. I wish him the best wherever he goes.
At least I won't have to read a million posts on why he isn't playing. Although I'm sure another player will fill that void.

Best wishes to him
I wish him all the success wherever he goes, but wasting a talent and blaming the coaching staff is ridiculous when other freshman see the field. Mayer, Fisher, Spindler, Tyree. Maybe he just wasn't a fit.
Does not do that. 5-star talents aren't all the same. Because Tyree and Mayer saw the field doesn't mean BK makes it easy for FR to get touches. The system at RB and TE is probably not the same at WR. That being said, JJ should've seen the ball more. We watched a kid a Clemson who was rated lower make plays vs ND and it wasn't a complex route. Just getting an athlete the ball and letting him make a play. The current system is way too complicated. Yes, some guys get it but ND isn't in a place to lose players like this.
the names you mentioned are not wide receivers. In the recent past, we haven't seen any wide receivers get much early playing time. I heard on several podcasts that the wide receiver position at ND is too complex (scheme, route running, etc.) for any player to get early playing time. I suspect this might also be part of the reason. If Watts transfers too, then something will have to be done.
Alabama, Clemson, OSU do it

as frosh.
And outside of Kevin Austin, I don't think any of these guys were initially considered "elite" recruits. There has always appeared to be something about Jordan Johnson that did not sit well with this coaching staff since he arrived on campus. Whether it was academics, work ethic, Football IQ, attitude, or all of the above. On the other hand, with the WR situation last year, it is hard to not wonder why Kelly couldn't seem to find even a limited role to effectively utilize neither Johnson or Xavier Watts' raw talent as he did with an inexperienced guy like Chris Brown. I am very curious to see if guys like Styles and Colzie see the field this year with so many other guys in front of them. If we see these 2 guys getting even a limited amount of meaningful playing time I guess the question about Johnson will answer itself.
didn't go to class etc, he wouldn't have been out there.
Davis is plenty fast and Skowronek was sneaky fast. McKinley was not, though, especially after his injuries.
I'd bet on Styles seeing a fair amount of action, and maybe Colzie, of the incoming frosh.
The post right below about Fuller and Claypool having a combine 5 catches in their FR years is what I mean. None of the others you mentioned got much playing time as FR either.
frosh, even the best.
I heard that stat on the Irish insider podcast a few months ago. I wish JJ the best wherever he lands.

Let's wait and see what happens with him before we hang Kelly/Tommy for it.

Who knows where his head is. He got in last year and promptly got a post-whistle penalty. Maybe the tape shows someone who is really talented, but not engaged?
