....because there is NO way that Clemson will stay for that length of time getting paid half of what SEC teams end up getting for that length of time. They are recruiting directly in the SEC footprint.
I suppose the ACC could try to swing an alliance with the B1G...but why would they split their revenue? A PAC 12 alliance seems impractical.
for each conference. And now the conferences are getting bigger to increase the money. What if it changes to a network for each program...at least the big programs? ND gets its program and it takes off. What's keeping ND from getting a camera crew and announcers and doing its own sports...not just football but basketball and other sports as well. Broadcasting on its own online network. If it works for them, and they make a ton of money, perhaps Alabama or others take part. Why would Alabama keep giving other schools the benefits of being in a conference TV deal where they provide the best ratings and produce the most money yet it is shared equally? Perhaps the building of larger and larger conferences is broken down by individualizing everything. With the speed of broadband constantly improving and everything going the way of the internet and everything on the internet being individualized, is it not possible?
Not saying it is likely, but a number of things I thought very unlikely 20 years ago are happening now. If it can happen, ND should be the first, Jack Swarbrick would be the guy to do it and FITV would be the start of it.
Of course total football revenue is a different story.
ND's payout from NBC has never been confirmed, but is widely reported to be $15M / yr. From what I can gather, here are the most recent payouts / team from the respective conferences. Yes, I track this stuff. No, I have no life.....
B10 - $51M
SEC - $45M
B12 - $38M
ACC - $32M
P12 - Unknown, but reported to be 'more than the ACC'.
ND also gets money from the ACC for football, which is not a full share, reportedly $6 - $10M per year. When the new SEC deal kicks in, in 2 (or 3?) years, the SEC will leapfrog the B10.
I maintain the best path forward for ND is to create and monetize its own network.
The myth that Notre Dame is independent for money is just that, a myth.

First of all. those $ you noted are for all sports, not just football. Notre Dame also gets ACC basketball money for which they receive a "full" share. So if you factor in ND's football $ (although it is reported at $15 M, in total value it is higher than that), plus the ACC football and basket money, ND's total take is probably around $30 M/yr. Granted that is less than other schools, but it isn't as if ND needs the money. With their essentially national tv contract for football, they are getting a lot more more in exposure for every home football game than almost any other school.

But if there is the ACC/Pac 12 combination, it doesn't hurt ND's "national school" approach.
I suspect that conferences are going to become more and more mute if we move to a 12 team playoff where only 3 conference (For the sake of argument, SEC, Big 10/12 combo, ACC/Pac 12 combo winners are likely to be given "byes." The challenge ND has is keeping some of it's national rivalries (USC/Stanford, etc) I suspect it's a given that Navy is going to have to be dropped (I get the history but no tears here) as they will clearly be dropped into the 2nd tier of what becomes" college football.
Change is inevitable.
Agree with all of this.
One note on the figures I gave....I'm pretty sure the range of $6-10M that we get from the ACC includes basketball revenue.
But your point is taken. Regardless of the final figure, nobody should shed a tear for ND. This is the same program that snapped its fingers and came up with $440M for Campus Crossroads. The money needed for our new, 2nd indoor practice facility ($40M) was similarly raised quickly. Oh, and as of the last fiscal year, the endowment stood at $13.3B.
This is why I don't really give a crap how much we receive in media rights. Does it really matter? I don't think it does.
You’re right about ND not being in it for the money on football. But the football money will now be directly tied to recruiting success, so it’s time to look at options. NBC has been a terrible partner IMO with no attention to marketing the brand well for decades…recently they upped their game a bit, but overall a pathetic effort. ND can do better.

Thank you.
All these should be on the table.....
1) Launch our own network

I’m confident Jack would keep ND in a great position not matter what.

That will drive the stake through the heart and soul of college football and make it an uninteresting collection of highly paid five stars playing for the most rich and powerful programs in college football history. Even out of that super conference, there will be more than a few who will act only as human punching bags with no chance of football glory. Only the payday will help heal the wounds. And what of Vandy in the SEC? Academics and baseball. Is that enough? ND has some serious thinking to do. Get with "the program" in modern day college football or go it alone and possibly be shut out of any play-off hopes. Stay tuned.
