It stripped Nebraska of an identity and now they basically aspire to be Iowa.
But, like others point out, maybe they had no choice and this is their best option. At least they bring something of a rival with them.
If ND can weather the storm and stay independent and play teams from whichever conferences survive, it could be a smart move for the brand.
The disparity in TV revenue later this decade will be enormous.
NBC will be bidding for the new Big 10 contract shortly. ND simply cannot compete with these giant conferences when it comes to television revenue. ND plays 7 home games per season, with maybe 2 being marquee. The Big 10 and SEC can produce multiple marquee games every week.
Pushing these conference realignments. They're not paying broadcast rights for the privilege of broadcasting Stanford- Colorado, or Iowa-Michigan State. They want games that have national appeal, and ND has to adapt to economic reality.,,
Losing that huge a market for their conference games is a kick in the groin. Playing Michigan and tOSU regularly would draw national audiences, as opposed to any other Pac12 opponents..

My in laws are HUGE Sc boosters and alums. They had long complained about scheduling problems. Not really surprised.
have access to midwest recruits. The BIG gets LA area tv market. It's probably a great deal all around - but I don't like it at all.
Don't people realize that tradition is one of the things that makes college sports special?
All this conference realignment sucks. NIL sucks. The transfer rules suck.

CAL, Washington State, the Zona schools, SC, Colorado. Quite frankly, I have a sense this was done because SC needed far better ratings for conference games than whatbtgey could get from failing PAC12 programs. Thus may be more of desperation than anything else...
Money doesn’t just talk, it also pounds the living fuck out of ‘tradition’. All that is solid melts into air. As Marx said in one of his better moments. All who have must acquire more, and the pressure to be economically productive is going to reduce the non-big time programs to, essentially, club sports. And those left standing are going to be pulled from association with their ‘schools’ by a myriad of pressures. Just watch what the successors of Jenkins and Jack Swarbrick will have to do to ND and its traditions with football.
College and high school football have been the only sports i ever really cared about all my life. And I am afraid both are going to be unrecognizable very soon.
Tied in with a 16 team playoff.

Several of the PAC12 programs were imploding. What conference games draw national audiences? Big10 has several mammoth programs which would get a far better viewership and higher broadcast fees.
The Pac12 was badly impacted by lockdowns and cancellation of a lot of games. That's very bad news for ADs already on the brink. The Los Angeles schools probably didn't have a choice...
Two Pac 12 stalwarts bolting for the Big 10? You'd sooner see Michigan and tOSU bolt for the Pac 12...
USC and UCLA reached out to the Big10 for membership. It's all about TV contracts.
I would have never thought they'd jump, but as it turns out, I'm going to have to eat some crow, feathers and all.
Mmmm. Tasty.

Spoke to a few sources who called USC and UCLA's move to the Big Ten a formality, with a press conference expected in next 24 hours. Perhaps as soon as tonight. This is essentially done.
