Before I made a choice I would have called Holtz, Davie & Weis. I'd find out why it did & didn't work. Davie had some good defenses at ND and knew the ropes when Lou left. Charlie could flash those Super Bowl rings for recruiting and it did get him Clausen. Neither panned out. Just my opinion but I don't think you can come into Notre Dame without Head Coaching experience. I hope like hell Freeman can keep the program where it currently is but this is going to be a tall order. I'd have thrown out some money to try and get Matt Ruhle out of Carolina. He did more with less at Temple & Baylor. Matt Campbell would have been the safe pick. He played Oklahoma & Clemson tough. If Freeman can rely on Rees & Golden until he gets his feet wet he can ease into being a head coach. With all this said I haven't been this excited for a season to start in a long time. Kick ass Marcus. Win us a National Championship!
I like Marcus & he is kicking ass on the recruiting front but his lack of any experience really concerns me. ND should never be the place to learn as you go along.
I guess having lived through Faust, Davie & Weis (3 coaches w/ no HC CFB when hired ((Davie & Weis had ZERO HC experience at all)) really jaded me I suppose.

But quickly changed my mind to Freeman. I'm glad Golden is around. I think he'll prove to be invaluable to Freeman's development as head coach.
Checked quite a few boxes - experience with major programs and the recruiting that comes with it, a turnaround of a program that was largely a mess, and a "B.C.S. Bowl" win over a Top-10 S.E.C. team, D.C. for a National Champion.

ten but lost to more talented teams,so the bloom was off the rose. He would have been a good choice this year though with less "juice" than the Freeman hire. Recruiting so far seems to confirm the choice. I would feel more confident if we hadn't blown that big lead in the bowl game.

I am happy with Marcus.
