Marcus will lift weights with the players tomorrow, go on a run with them and hug. All good - this is what you get with a “players coach”. Gonna be a long 5 years
keeps folded up in his hand that he refers to before every play run by the offense and maybe the immediate transfer in of Caleb Williams and Jordan Addison. Who knows, it could help.
And oh yeah, put the notes on paper for Coach Freeman and put Rees up in the coaching box.
It turned out well.
When ND hired George O'Leary, a reporter asked him how he would adjust to the players at ND. His response was, "They better adjust to me." The "We love coach" stuff peters out quickly if you continue to suck.

Never, ever was the hiring of Holtz billed as bringing in a "player's coach." Much like Holtz, the O'Leary hire was billed as bringing in a disciplinarian. I mentioned his quote upon being hired. It goes without saying that Dan Devine's hiring was never billed as bringing in a "player's coach."
You reckon that Bobby Knight was called a player's coach when Texas Tech hired him? What about Rick Pitino at any of his stops?

You're a genius.
Let's see, the AD at the time was Gene Corrigan, right? Okay. That gives me something. Who was the renowned SBT sports columnist at the time? Oh, what was his name? Wait, I may still have my 1986 Street & Smith's with Joe Morris on the cover somewhere! Can we start out with one source in which no one describes Holtz as a player's coach?
Edit: I found it! Yep, yep, yep, there's no mention of Holtz being a player's coach in the article. Okay, would a dozen sources from 1985/86 that don't describe him as a player's coach be acceptable?
