e'll do enough to stay put but everyone knows he should be doing more. For instance, I'd trade Rees for UNC's OC before Saturday's game.

...and takes it out on others.
Rees recruited Pyne, called such a shitty game against Marshall that they had to use Buchner more than they wanted in the run game, and most significantly didn't want to bring in JT Daniels or Keedon Slovis.
Rees has no one to blame but himself for the situation ND is in and he knows it.
He's smart football mind, but lacks experience and good judgement. It worked okay when he was with an experienced coach in Kelly, but is being exposed now that Freeman is the coach.

why didn't we hire Cutcliffe to help him. Is it true he was available?

Rees has Kelly tendencies that are going to require a strong pimp hand by Freeman, if there’s any hope of success. No employee should require that much effort.
I realize he’s young, but if Rees isn’t Freeman’s guy, he’s in a pickle. Agreed to/accepted the hire and wants to demonstrate loyalty as a HC, but he’s also got a hard headed inexperienced kid that requires a shit ton of development that he doesn’t have the capacity to provide.
Memo to Rees:
You have gamebreakers: Tyree, Styles, and Lenzy.
Use them early and often!
It's not brain surgery.
Some coaches just get in their head that certain kids are the stars, when in fact they aren't and reality is evident to all parties involved but the coach.
And this isn't some veiled rant about my kid as he takes after his mother and is slow, lacks spatial awareness and has terrible hand-eye coordination.
I'm also not talking about the coach playing his own kid as QB or point guard who is a dunce and a fat tub-o-lard. It occasionally happens in situations when the coaches don't have kids on the team.
Better coaches more quickly assess and re-deploy talent, at least from what I've seen. Rees, and to an extent Kelly, seemed to make their mind up on guys and once they did it was all over.
