Link: Notre Dame's Appeal Of Terrible JD Bertrand Targetting Call Denied

A number of games that I watched this past weekend and over the past few weeks have had game influencing calls in decent level conference games.
The TCU - OK game was a complete shit show and the SCUM - Iowa game was also poorly called.
It's starting to remind me of when the refs in the NBA got caught betting on games - sloppy. With all the NIL and gambling money so obviously involved, it does start to make you wonder.

Teddy Roosevelt, that paragon of masculinity, helped lead a campaign to change football at the turn of the century due to head injuries leading to death. I'm sure there were people like you calling them names.
The collisions of modern football are far more violent than then. Helmets prevent death, but even in our own ND family we've lost people to CTE.
I thought the call was wrong. I'd rather have wrong calls then no-calls. Leading with the crown of the helmet or attacking a player above the shoulders brings nothing to the game. I played rugby, where those kinds of hits have been illegal for decades.
If this call wasn't over turned, no calls will be.
Gabe Jeudy-Lally was ejected from the 2nd half of last Thursday's game. BYU appealed and Jeudy-Lally will now be available for the whole game on Saturday.
If it isn't, it should be.
Suppose he runs straight at an opponent with his helmet leading and the ball carrier comes in contact with the facemask or helmet of an opponent. Can that be called or is this just a one way street?

Absolutely make the call against the defensive player when he comes into a tackle leading with the crown of the helmet, and/or goes at the ball carrier's head. But, we have seen many times where the ball carrier lowers his head at the last moment, after the defensive player has committed to where he is aiming the tackle, and the defensive player is called for targeting. There should be more emphasis on stopping the ball carrier leading with his head.
