It seems like no matter who ND gets if they don't turn out to be Andrew Luck there was always something wrong with him. ND has gotten 4* and 5* talent over the past 10-15yrs and it simply has not been developed. If many of those guys went elsewhere and killed it folks would be asking -- see...why can't ND get talented like that!? I don't get it how some of you don't understand that. Every good QB recruit that comes in seems to be the problem. I just read a thread below that had an excuse for every player. Gunner Kiel was this, Dayne Crist was that, Wimbush was this, Hendrix was that, Buchner is this, Jurko was that, it's ridiculous to think it's been alllll these players issue. So did Weis get lucky with 4* Brady Quinn and then again with 5* Jimmy Clausen?? But BK didn't with 5* Kiel and 5* Crist?? For all his shortcomings Weis understood offense and had the experience to help develop and utilize the talents of Quinn and JC. BK and Co...didn't and wouldn't.
In that thread below there's a line where someone said passing stats can be deceiving -- this is hilarious. If a kid has avg stats then "well how good can he be if he's only got 1800yds as a Senior..the talent is only going to get tougher". Can't win with some of you. Look at Wimbush, he was consider the best dual-threat in the country by many. Played ELITE competition in HS. Said to have the biggest arm in the country, wowed everyone at the UA game, and was notably faster in the 100m than Lamar Jackson. You think if Lamar Jackson came to ND he would've been as good as he was?? You think Wimbush goes to Louisville would've been better than he was at ND? Deshone Kizer was obviously the better QB and it took Zaire getting hurt to get him on the field and he proceeded to put together 2 really good seasons. Under a good OC and QB developer how good could he have been?? And he too, like allll the guys I mentioned another 4 or 5 star, State POY. Now we have Drew Pyne who folks keep acting like this is a surprise he's doing well and he'll eventually come back down to Earth or he's not that good and it'll eventually show. The kid was a 4*, State Player of the Year, HS All-American with offers from wait for it....Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Texas A&M, Baylor, Penn State, Miami, Oklahoma, Tenn, Ole Miss, LSU, so alllll those school offer this kid and all misevaluated him?? Now if he had selected an SEC team instead of ND and was down there lighting it up with Lane Kiffin or with Heupel at Tenn, or shoot Saban felt like he remined him of lil ole 3* Mac Jones and gave him the start...many here would be, why couldn't we land that guy! You've HAD that guy. And I mean several times had that guy. The previous staff just couldn't or didn't develop him. And it wasn't like he didn't have stiff comp. All these guys were here with another elite recruit including now. Buchner was a 5* recruit before one bad spring camp dropped him. So you had 2 elite recruits battling....awesome. How many programs have that? Usually just the top ones.
So many of the QBs folks have envied and wanted were often time rated lower than the guy that was here. And guys who won titles or were the top pick...weren't THE GUY til after a few years. Andrew Luck wasn't a 5* recruit. Deshaun Watson wasn't a 5* recruit. Joe Burrow was a 3* Dual-Threat on Rivals. Huh?! Baker Mayfield was a walk-on (hate using him as an example), Stetson Bennett is a walk-on. Yes, he's got a lot of talent around him but again...that means nothing if it's not used right. Look at Texas and TAMU. TONS of 5 and 4 stars...getting beat by TCUs and Texas Techs, the smaller schools in the same state. Point is stop always putting on the player if he doesn't develop.
These guys are 18yrs old looking for guidance and coaching...the adults should be the ones held as much accountable if the kid doesn't develop. Now if CJ Carr shows up next year or the year after, I hope Rees has figured out how to help these guys or else Freeman needs to make a change asap. Bring in a QB guy or something because it'll hard to stomach another 5yrs of getting the talent, hearing guys bemoan ND doesn't get talent, and the team under-producing because of it.
certainly didn't have a stellar last year though losing Hunter really hurt. He certainly didn't develop in the pros.
everyone else???
The recruiting services rankings are just entertainment for college football fans. Some elite QBs are just obvious like Trevor Lawrence, but those guys only come along every 5-7 years, most years there is not an elite QB recruit and it's just good potential based on reputation and who's recruiting who, but the services need to fill out their rankings to entertain us and get our money so they just assign stars for their customers.
There was no Trevor Lawrence recruit last year and there's no elite recruit this year either, they're all projects. This is why you have to recruit good HS projects every year and not take a flyer on guys that don't pass the eye test just to take one.
None this year?? Folks are hyping up Arch Manning like he's Eli, Peyton, and Archie rolled into 1! I joke and I agree with you, it's mainly entertainment and extremely subjective but folks treat it like gospel. And, I think the issue is coaches who trust their eyes are the ones that win and that's few. Most just follow what's trendy or line up in the same line the other coaches do. I think finding the prospect that fits your style or can be developed to is more important that getting the ranked recruit because of his rank. So for example, CJ Carr looks more like a Pro-Style QB...is the idea to move more to that style of offense?? Then no need to recruit DT Qb's...and also...no need to run RPOs 70% of the time when you're NOT bringing in QBs who don't run 4.5.
