The defense isn't perfect as many of you have pointed out its flaws. But for all its flaws, it's performed pretty good. And if you watch other games, every other team has the same problems: missed tackles, players out of position, etc. Alabama gave up 52 points, for crying out loud. So defenses everywhere struggle in this age of offensive football.
Which brings up the obvious: Why can't ND join this parade? This falls squarely on Rees. If you want to blame Freeman for giving Rees autonomy, that's nothing more than Monday -morning quarterbacking of a decision that seemed reasonable at the time. But as for Rees, he calls plays the other team knows are coming. And to barely play Tobias Merriweather, when by all accounts he dominates practice and we saw a glimpse of that last night, is malpractice.
I think we've seen enough where I still believe the playcalling duties should be turned over to Gerad Parker for the rest of the year. Let Rees keep his OC title.
Finally, I'm tired of some (most?) of you already throwing the towel in on Freeman. You sound exactly like Clemson fans when Dabo was hired. I know I'm a broken record on that now, but good gosh, let him find a stride. And right now it's not obvious he can't.

season transfers.
Pyne is more than functional. But the offensive scheme is attrocious.
We literally would probably score more points if this board picked 75 plays for the week and someone other than Tommy Rees called them in.
In fact I was the one saying we had no choice but to play him. Doesn’t make him good though. He is not a difference maker true FBS qb. Neither was Buchner. Rees also didn’t overshoot the wide open Merriweather. He has NOT been accurate downfield. He’s been a dink and dunk guy.

every time the camera showed him he was chomping on gum with a look of being overwhelmed. Hardly ever in a huddle or talking to anyone. He really does look overwhelmed.

Judging every decision ever made in the history mankind is essentially Monday morning quarterbacking.
What concerns me is the lack of real time adjustments during games. If it looks obvious that Rees/Golden is going off the path, the head coach needs to make or be part of adjustments to right the course.
I see very little evidence of this. I haven’t closed the book the Freeman but data points are concerning.
ery decision about the offense. From who plays to what the game plan is to what play is called. He's in way over his head, and his solution will be installing even more plays with more bizarre personnel groupings. He needs to go.

I saw a ton of missed tackles (all year), LBs were on their heels when they needed to make a play.....I get D held Stanford 16 pts. but (keep in mind Stanford's OL was mostly 2nd stringers) and their RB was far from spectacular.....help me understand how the D was so good
Power 5 opponents.
