personality issues at hand. I've worked with people like Rees. Smart, perhaps too smart and lacking the awareness that his or her plans aren't being understood, let alone executed. This leads to frustration, anger, blaming, etc. Tommy has to bring his brilliance to life through other people, and that is not a skill he's developed. His comments both read and heard are indicative of a supremely self-confident person without the resume to back up his self-image. We are seeing in real time the pride before the fall. I don't think he has it in him to course correct, because to him, it's not his fault. It's players not executing his brilliant plans.

and, much like with his mentor, unlikely to change. The "I'm the smartest guy in the room" syndrome,
all the way up to the final seconds of the play clock. DC’s are making him look silly and baiting him into bad plays.
If the coaches are going to blame execution, the first thing that needs to be done is simplification. Which as you point out, doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

the beat reporters are asking the tough questions because I would like answers to why certain calls are made or not made? Why the best talent isn’t playing more? Why do some of best players get limited touches? Why don’t our best skill players get the ball in space more? Why do a lot of the WR’s struggle to get separation? Why is the offense so anemic more times than not? The offensive lineman are highly recruited yet why do they struggle to get push and consistently have a great power run game? Why has ND struggled to land elite QB’s? Why do most other power 5 football teams have more productive offenses yet have less talent? Tommy, who game plans with you or is it just you? Tommy, does Marcus understand offense and how to attack an opponent’s defense? Tommy, do you study what other good offensive coordinators do scheme wise and try to incorporate such schemes or plays into the ND offense? Tommy, why does the ND offense never seem to have an identity?
Just seems like nobody asks these guys tough but fair questions.
is so important.
solid. That is alarming to me. Sure, you look like a dick throwing your coach under the bus. But, what's the alternative? You look stupid and incompetent because you can't see the obvious and you're the head coach.
years. While I wasn’t a big Kelly fan but I do give him credit for getting the program relevant again and we did make the playoffs twice. He wasn’t the best recruiter but the Kelly era told us what we’ve all known. We need a great coach, with great assistants AND all need to be relentless recruiters to land a few more studs, then ND can kick the door down and win a title.
recruiter, strategist and game day coach for that. Kelly left huge holes on the roster especially at the O skill positions. The difference between Kelly teams and elite teams was just so painfully obvious in the playoff games..
Freeman was hired primarily for his recruiting abilities. So far the gamble doesn’t look good, but he’s here and he will get the chance.
who ices their own leading rusher from the previous 3 games (the only 3 you've won) for the first 3 quarters of the game AND doesn't continue to go back to Merriweather after he makes it look easy getting behind the defense, which none of our other WRs seem to be able to do.
to continue to make him look bad. I’m telling you, we’re dealing with a personality disorder.
Of the master plan seems shunned.
the ball again. Kelly would go as far to say, "We really love what XXXX is doing, he practices great and we expect him to get a lot of playing time this week." The guy would get 1 snap. Never to be heard from again.
