didn't get a "fair shot" at WR. I don't blame coaches, or even players. Sports at all levels are full of players who feel this way.... it is one reason sports teach values like "competition", "persistence", "overcoming adversity" and "making the most of opportunities." As a parent (and player) it is definitely tough to see a student/athlete not get a fair shot, but it is a competition. Where one player does not get a shot, another does and often makes the most of that opportunity. Coaches have to make those decisions every day and it is not helpful to attribute malicious intent to it.

PJ was a tremendous HS QB who led his school to the PA state championship in his senior year.
Go back and look at his tape. He was a great dual threat QB. In addition to being a great passer, he was able to rip off long runs for TDs.
He could have been the missing link for ND in the hopes to compete seriously for a NC. Unfortunately, as with so many other QBs, Kelly screwed him up. All the bs about mechanics--nothing was broken but Purpleface kept insisting on fixing it.
PJ was ready for the scrap heap by the time BK was done with him. He never recovered.
runner in the big games when we really needed it. I have no idea why they never let him really play in the backup time to develop him. His ceiling and ours as a team was much higher with him at QB and there was ample opportunity for him to have a couple really good years even if he had to wait behind Book. Again, I just don't get it.

BC's offensive line this year is horrible. I would dare say that they are worse than we were during the Marshall game. Any quarterback would have a hard time putting up top notch numbers with that shitty line blocking for him.
If anything, the fact that he was still able to put up some respectable numbers with that awful offensive line that got him battered and injured, makes me think that he's showing that he does have "it."
147-247, 59.5% completion, 1711 yards, 11 TD, 8 INT

They are all QB's that, despite being pretty high-level recruits, did not play at a satisfactory level at Notre Dame. The proof is in the pudding. Look at their level of play at the universities that they transferred to. Not one was successful. Buchner has not been successful either and from watching his play this year and last year, won't be successful in the future. It's not BK's fault, nor anyone else's. They just did not pan out at the college level.
This happens everywhere (DJU at Clemson for example) and at every position. Unfortunately, ND has had more than its share of QB busts. As per it being BK's fault, you might want to ask Jayden Daniels how bad he is with QB's. Daniels has improved immensely from last year. That isn't to say that Kelly is a QB guru because he isn't. But the busts at QB at ND were not his fault, nor TR's or anyone else's. It just happens.
It was Brian Kelly's foolish and stubborn decision to try to turn Dayne Crist into a spread-option QB, instead of letting him be a classic dropback passer. He was putting up some good passing numbers before that awful knee injury.
It was also Brian Kelly's foolish decision to not let him at least try to redeem himself in another game in 2011. Yes, South Florida was a debacle, and he did a bad job on the 2nd drive (the first drive wasn't his fault), but to not let him have a shot at trying again was a terrible mistake. That should have been a 10+ win, BCS bowl team.
Kelly's attitude was that "there are my guys, and there are guys who were brought in by the last guy." (he considered Rees one of his own, even though Weis brought him in)
There were several of those locker room speeches of his where he would say the above, and came ever so close to chasing away Manti Teo.
Crist made a terrible decision to play for Kansas. For that matter, it was foolish of Weis to take the job there after having had a very successful season with the KC Chiefs as the OC.
There was virtually no talent on that team, especially on the offensive line.
up? Pyne, Buchner, Wimbush, Rees, Crist, Jurkovic, Keil, and others simply didn't have the talent to be coached up?
By your statement ND has had an odd array of highly touted QB's that simply were not capable of competing in the college game and
ND has been unlucky for over a dozen years by having them here.
All that talent and only the 3* guys could make it to the starting QB job under Kelly. He is either really poor at identifying talent or he's
just terrible at coaching highly touted talent. But for sure, he is terrible at one of those. And being terrible at either one, makes him
not a good QB coach or a coach a talented QB would want to play for.
Most of those QB's regressed under Kelly...Zaire is a perfect example as is Golson. Regressing and not showing improvement is a sure sign of bad coaching, especially when it is pretty much every QB that played under the same coach
offensive side with Mayer. I do question why certain frosh don't get more playing reps but maybe they just aren't as great yet as we all think they are. When ND has a first round talent, they do seem to shine regardless of the coach. That said, ND just needs to land more of them. We have talented kids overall, but are still lacking some stud skill guys like GA, Bama, and tOSU have. You are right. Of all the ND guys that transferred, none have done squat at their new schools and some of those schools were a step down. Jayden Daniels may be one of the best QB's that Kelly has had. I've seen him play a few times and the kid is solid.
