I am not an expert on Sam Hartman. Seen him only twice and he looked good to me but I’m going to withhold judgement on how good I think he is until I actually see him play more. But he does bring:
-45 FBS starts at a P5 program
-27 FBS wins (ND wins record is 30 by comparison)
-1600 FBS throws
-13,000 FBS passing yards
-110 FBS TD’s (ACC record)
-4 bowl game starts
-2 bowl game wins
-5 years experience
-only 1 injury 3 years ago in those 5 years
-1 year of eligibility
We will find out what he ends up being at ND, but Hartman would vastly improve a very young QB room and provide great experience those young guys need all the while not threatening any of them as he only has a year of eligibility (and not messing with Freeman/Rees’s plans going forward). He would provide the security of knowing that we have someone who can and has done the job at a pretty darn high level with proven durability for 5 years. He ensures we won’t be in the same situation next year that we were in this year. At very minimum, we get a bridge to the future of Buchner, Angeli, Minchey and Carr and he is probably much more than that. This is as close to exactly what we need right now as we could ever hope to find.
Regardless of whether we think he will be Gods gift to QB’ing at ND or just an above average FBS QB, everyone should be very happy with this get if we do in fact land him.
Hartman is the type of guy we should have as a backup at ND CONSISTENTLY who can come in and take you 10-2 instead of 12-0...but maybe im just used to Holtz 5* talent at every position and even backups but he should be a guy we have as a backup these days in the very least....Remember Kevin McDougal
Spew all the stats you want but that’s all that matters
Absolutely, lose no more than 2 games with him at QB
But I trust you in this

If we would have won, he wouldn’t gave counted it. Has nothing to with Buchner, Pyne, or Hartman.
Hopefully not 8-6
That may be more of an indictment of what we had, mind you.

Statistically as good or better than anyone we've had in quite awhile. Accurate, athletic, smart.

Steady in the pocket, moves around easily, keeps his eyes downfield, does not panic or get happy feet.
Finds receivers, not just the primary
Quick release, medium arm strength, willing to throw downfield, or to check down.
Good footwork in the running game
Displays the confidence you would expect in a four year starter, the game does not look too fast for him.
Not a great runner. Can't throw 40 yards with a wrist flip.
With him as quarterback in 2022 ND would have been a 1 or 2 loss team.
Wow. Who would we have beaten that the QB made that much of a difference Vice our defense?
They would have won both those games with above average quarterbacking. I believe Sam Hartman is an above average quarterback. CFP rankings are beyond the limits of my predictive powers.

I'm not an expert on him either as I've only observed him for two games now (excluding the time he played against us as a true freshman in '18 which I honestly don't recall how he looked). However based on the limited viewing I've had combined with his stats vs our common opponents this season, I would say he is a significant upgrade over Pyne or Buchner "right now". While it would be great to bring in an Elite QB from the portal that's probably just not very realistic in this NIL 'acquisition fee' environment, and looking back at this season and how close we were to 10-2, maybe a significant upgrade vs elite is enough for now to produce an 11-1 type season in '23.

Use him, he knew Pyne didn't have big arm
He missed seeing wide open check downs more times than I can count, and that's not about arm strength (Pyne actually has a pretty good arm) it's about him not seeing things well.
If I was to list just one thing Hartman seems vastly superior at over Pyne, it would be field vision. It's just one area, but it's a big one...so many of our punts should have been easy conversions if Pyne just took the check downs.

in theory, meaning Pyne 'could' be better as a 5th than Hartman is now.
I don't think that will be the case as Hartman does have some physical advantages, but I'm definitely not trying to crap on Pyne either. Nothing I say is meant to demean Pyne, I'm not one of his haters as I think he did a pretty good job for us, and kept the season down to a small campfire instead of erupting into a full on dumpster rire.
I'm simply stating what I see of the two players right now.

I agree completely with this post! Not only would he bring real experience to the QB room, but he can be a difference-maker in any game he plays. He reads the whole field; has a quick release with the right touch; and quick feet - all important assets in being a top QB. When you add his poise in the pocket and presence as a field leader shown on the game-securing drive last night, he is the best package in the transfer portal....
