How does a kid from Northern Indiana choose a school like FSU?
And I take your question as sarcastic?
I suppose I get a little cranky how folks want to blame the recruiter when a kid makes a choice in his best interest.
I'm not angry at the kid (certainly). And I don't know that it's the coach. I'm genuinely asking the question why we're not competitive/winning here.
I feel that too often on this board it devolves from a discussion of 'why' x or y happens to 'We are ND' boosterism that doesn't want to understand the logic behind a decision (and instead attacks the coach or the kid). I believe improving ND's program will require staring squarely at where ND is short of the best and then deciding if ND is willing to take those steps or not. Personally, I'm actually fine saying ND shouldn't take some of the steps others have taken, but that's an affirmative decision to take on more risks than other programs.
So, as it relates to Fiske, I think he's a very stark example--here's a kid who lives an hour from campus; his family could have seen him play 8-9 games in person this year; he could have a great ramp to the NFL; and he would have had a better chance at the National Championship than he will at FSU. So if ND isn't compelling to someone like Fiske (who would have spent 1 year as a non-degree seeking grad student), ND is going to have very significant challenges more broadly.
My sense (though it's all murky) is that ND's NIL game involves a bit too much cleverness/purity than the market, but I'm not even sure that's the case. Just seeking to understand.
