Link: Report: Wake Forest QB Sam Hartman Likely to Transfer to Notre Dame?

I am not against transferring when done right and reasonably. This doesn’t appear to be right nor reasonable. Short of this young man being a life long ND fan, how can ND be the most likely destination….ALREADY? There had to be some discussion between the two parties which violates all that is collegiate about the sport. Did the qb initiate contact? To that I ask does it matter? We’d be crying bloody murder if Alabama came calling for Michael Meyer!!! I admit I don’t know the details and I may be jumping to conclusions but the timing reeks of inexcusable and guilty truth.

...any longer.
contact. Guy is still playing for Southern Cal.

First and foremost, Marcus has pretty much handled himself and team related business in the right way since his hiring. No reason to think he's handled this differently other than what is being put out by the media. The same media that was connecting Card, Leary, Sanders, McCall, etc. etc. to the possibility of landing at Notre Dame. If we weren't the favorite, we were usually top 2. It didn't take Thamel much thought to predict that a one year, above average QB with NFL aspirations, and National TV coverage every week might come to ND.
I actually agree with almost everything you said. Marcus seems like a stand up man. The most likeable coach at ND since Holtz…by far. Thamel may have put it all together. Again I fully admit I don’t have all…any details. From a fan perspective, the timing and the level of confidence of the reports seem to indicate some communication.
loophole or acting when there is no rule against it.

No. There are no rules. Exactly the problem and what I am lamenting. All stability and integrity is lost in a society, sports league, in any organization, in the absence of rules that maintain fair play and a body that enforces those rules. One cannot simply take from their neighbor because they can. Sadly we have neither in college sports.
much any communication pre-portal entry.

Well I stand corrected.
Only thing is Jimbo just wiped his ass with the rule book
I wouldn’t blame them if ND got out of this whore’s mess entirely and either went Ivy or formed a conference of like minded schools who don’t want to engage in this shit. The University doesn’t exist to give us “big time” CFB Saturday’s. Not part of its mission. On the other hand if they want to play in the whore’s arena of “big time CFB”, there are certain compromises they need to make. One is if there isn’t a rule a against contact, and you want a player, do what you need to do within reasonable boundaries, such as if he contacts you, respond.
My ego is tied far more to ND as an elite academic institution than as a gridiron powerhouse, I get so off when our former players return to get their degrees.

All to put dollars in the pockets of the schools and ESPN.
Face it we aren’t gonna be, don’t want to and shouldn’t do the things you need to be one of the top dogs in this shit pile.
Many of them actually need it.
doing in reality is escalating a bidding war for the top talent with the school willing to pay the most winning out. That isn’t college football as it’s supposed to be.
...the cash cow for as long as they can continue to pretend that what is happening...isn't.
And ND will be the only school following them.
Probably could have stopped right there.
is the new reality.
People would also be bitching if ND wasnt adapting.
Can’t win.
It might be foolish for a player to enter the portal without some sense of interest at his preferred landing spot. Mr. Hartman is an adult making an adult decision. It was not be shocking if Pyne had reached out to ASU before entering the portal.

Of developing QBs.
If this happens, it's a huge win for Notre Dame.
Do Oklahoma fans care that Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, or Jalen Hurts were transfers? Or are they just happy that Lincoln Riley inserted them into a system and they put up numbers with 2 winning the Heisman and the other being a finalist?
I assume Oklahoma won similarly but like ND,I don't recall any national title banners being hoisted.
Alleged mission. At some point, the question needs to be asked, "Why are we here and what is it that we are ultimately trying to do?"
Folks like you will rationalize any of ND's participation and complicity with this hideous system that becomes grosser every season because, "We gotta be competitive with (insert football factory here)." Why is that, again? It will be 40 years since ND won a national championship before you know it. It's entirely possible that it will never again win a national championship. Big deal. Of course, ND could bring admission requirements for jocks down to SEC level, create Mickey Mouse majors, and do a whole battery of things to become Alabama North. Why don't you guys just advocate that? It's more honest. It's all about winning football games. That's the most important thing. Just say it.
Accepting a graduate from Wake Forest (a damn good school in case you never heard of it) into an ND graduate program is the equivalent of having Mickey Mouse majors and reducing admissions requirements to an SEC level?
There may be some things ND is doing that is counter to its "alleged mission", but accepting Sam Hartman into a graduate program he likely could have gotten in even if he wasn't a QB isn't one. Do some research before you post this garbage.

These kids aren't currently, and never have been, under contract. You are worried about ND shafting Wake Forest, but from Hartman's perspective, his future has greater potential at ND. In this case, you are arguing that the desires of the institution are greater than the prosperity of the individual.
I don't believe any of this is good for the future of CFB, but at this point, there is no absolute moral good or bad related to tampering until pay for play enters the equation.
Even if we were to assume that Tommy intitiated the Hartman recruitment, that falls well short of ND selling it's soul.

You have to dump QBs.So you would have dumped Montana?

But QBs like Tom Brady, Joe Montana would win in any era,Brady just won a SB a few yrs ago.
chart as a freshman.
It has NOTHING to do with the ultimate talent levels and EVERYTHING to do with the changes in college football.
Clear you don't want to understand...
Most QBs need time ala Tom Clements,Tony Rice also
sit out a year on transfer then.
Much more likely someone like Montana transfers now and ND has to fill gaps. They had the luxury of waiting things out longer then...
Who have they "dumped"?
In ND lore, in your own words,he would have transferred. So in today's game, ND would have chased out the greatest QB or 2nd greatest in history.Who have they dumped,Drew Pyne.OK he's no Montana but did go 8-2,doesn't seem to be in character that ND is known for, giving the underdog a chance...And let's assume, unlikely I know, that Buchner becomes the 2nd Montana. With this transfer ND is on verge of chasing him. These transfers may work short term, but have long term ramifications.
The answer is the changes to the rules of College Football...like I told you.
Creating a multiverse of Montana scenarios notwithstanding...
And I think long term, it prove to be more productive.May mean more 8-4 seasons but it may mean very productive Buchners,Angelis, etc, etc.
Kelly took us to two CFPs playing by the rules
I don’t see Hartman taking us to a CFP next year.
I don't see Hartman taking us to the CFP next year either.

...have now is minor league professional football located in college towns...
Doesn't seem to be NDs mission. In any event your solution seems to have merit,as the leader to form a new conference,I think they could attract enough followers to make it viable. This would retain the collegiate feel and let the SEC and others form the minor league.
...because they remain addicted to the money.
Hopefully they are developing a plan because they will have to depart as things get increasingly unseemly every season...
And a collegiate conf.could still draw.

Here is my point: Pyne's Pass Efficiency Rating was 155.3 while Sam Hartman's was 159.4
Pyne has 3 years of remaining eligibility while Hartman has 1.
Would ND be better off spending more attention on developing and retaining their players than to look outside? If looking outside brings in a difference maker in talent, I can understand it.
academic standards for their general student body, but apply none to very little on their revenue sport athletes. Southern Cal in football, and Duke or Georgetown in b-ball immediately come to mind in the private category.
ND could go down that road, but I doubt it.
Otherwise, you get out of the snake pit entirely.

Yeah let's continue to SUCK at QB while we "develop" Buchner. What happened to the days of Notre Dame winning with a good QB ?

Joe Montana, Tom Clements, Tony Rice won natl titles in junior yr.The he'll with that, not doing that anymore.

Only make offers to Top 10 QBs...Take one each year
Freeman didn't land one 5-star in this class. He has yet to demonstrate his capability of doing so.
