But I don’t want Hartman or any transfer QB. I just don’t think it’s healthy for a program to keep putting band aides and never developing consistency. Buchner hasn’t started three full games yet and they actively look for a one year replacement? Whats the end game? There’s a very good chance Carr isn’t Joe Montagne either. Will we get another transfer in 2025 after his freshmen year?

candidates with only one year left...there's a non-zero chance that TB will resolve his Passing issues and be "The Guy" we need...and that's got to be on their minds...also makes Freeman's task more challenging. Nonetheless, I agree with Frank that given TB's remaining eligibility, a 'deal' could be worked out with Hartman and TB. btw, isn't it possible for TB to play in 3-4 games w/o losing eligibility and thereby continue developing his in-game skills?

the portal option, and BGI's take on the projected roster, it looks like we'll have to play that game.
come. I give Buchner all the credit in the world for pulling yesterday out, but he did throw 3 ints, 2 of them for 14 points the other way.
As pointed out he also has 3 years eligibility left. He will be used in some role next year and can be scary good with his legs.
position. I think Buchner would do very well after about three games or so behind the line we should have next year and we have three easier games to start the season which would be a huge help. But the backup QB would be the concern for me. Could Angeli provide the quality necessary should he be called upon? I don't know.
There is a lot to be said for rolling with the guys that are a part of the ND family. I think they'd rally behind and love Buchner as they did for Pyne. That's important and pretty powerful for a team. There is also a lot to be said for getting a guy that is proven to be a top FBS QB to have certainty in that position in the starter and backup.
It is an age old question. My experience is that the most successful companies over the long term tend to bring in raw/young talent, develop it over the years, and promote from within.
Some companies are different and tend to look to the outside for their talent, particularly at the leadership level.
Both approaches have their pros/cons.
Some of it is what type of culture you want to build, and the type of industry/markets you serve.
Also, whether you are pursuing short term profits versus long term dominance.

in addition, players at this level are naturally competitive and improve when their positions are threatened.
I like Buichner a lot... but also appreicate what Hartman brings.
the second half.
This was supposed to be his development year.
Conan should have bridged us to the better roster QB - that person just didn’t exist
After 2 3/4 games? Are these guys not given the opportunity to develop anymore? I get the bone headed mistakes are frustrating but that’s normal with young players. Especially for a guy that hasn’t really played in 3 years but the potential is undeniable.
He will be in prime position to start in 2024 and 2025 if he develops.

Pyne transferred; Buchner didn’t. He played a lot better than I expected and may prove to be an upgrade from Pyne, but there’s still not much depth. You can bring in a Hartman and have Buchner play a year behind him then take over.

That would just be dumb.

Next season will play out like this one.
Kelly and Rees recruiting failures created the demand for an experienced QB transfer next year.
The band aids work for Lincoln Riley and Jack Coan was great
I’ve read many times on here that Buchner was a “near 5*” whatever that means, and that Pyne and Angeli are 4*’s
How is that bad recruiting? Or do the recruiting services suck when it comes to the players ND recruits?
Or is Rees a terrible OC and QB developer?
Which is it?
Last night and this morning I see posters blaming Rees for Buchner’s 3 interceptions.
Great win over a completely depleted middle of the pack SEC team with last minute heroics. Congrats on a 9-4 season. Not sure if that is success or not since we had one loss last year.
Now it’s 8 nauseating months of pontificating over our chances for the CFP next year.
Rees shares some blame for the 2nd pick six but, not the other 2 INTs.

physical talents necessary to back it up. That much we know for certain after this season.
Angeli was a 4* on some services but a 3* on some services as well. We haven't seen him so we don't know of his abilities.
Buchner was the legit high 4* (#70-ish recruit in the country with a .96-.97 recruiting grade. But he was used as a running back last year and got damn near killed his first two games this year behind an atrocious offensive line and before the receivers developed. I am fine with him as the starter next year if that would happen as I think he'd hit his stride after a couple real games of live experience existing in a decent pocket and making reads and throws. He is developable into something pretty special in my view.
So, the QB room this season was basically a freshman, a guy that wasn't ever going to be a good FBS QB at a program like ND and a guy that had no experience as the QB1. That is not a good QB room. Last year, we needed to take a transfer. So, yeah, recruiting under Kelly was a problem.
Development has been a problem as well. These problems go far beyond our QB room this year. This is a long-standing problem under Kelly.
He is a proven Div 1 commodity
We currently have no one that fits that description.
