I also like that ND seems more willing as an organization to take transfers.

He is injury prone, turnover prone and inaccurate. It is a no brainer to bring Hartman in. If Buchner ends up proving that he is better, then he can replace Hartman. If not, then we will all be glad that we got Hartman. If the reason for not bringing in Hartman is that it might upset the chemistry in the QB room, it is just silly. Just as silly as not bringing in a transfer in 2022 for the same reason.
PSU will finally lose Sean Clifford this year.It is widely thought 5*Drew Allar will be QB next yr,as far as I know, they're not looking at portal.Allar was all of 12 for 19, 2 TDs this year.It is so shortsighted to abandon QBs on campus, but in PSUs case would make more sense than ND where Buchner will be a junior.Allar is a true freshman this year.

He only played one season of HS football b/c of injuries. Missed a couple games last year due to injury (despite only being a part-time player), missed the Spring game due to injury and missed 10 games this year due to injury.
And he didn't miss any games in 21 because he was unable to go. They were very minor "tweaks" and certainly would have played if needed. They were being extra cautious because he was the backup and not needed. He played a lot and was forced into a primarily running role. It's more surprising that he didn't sustain a significant injury that would have forced him out for extended time.
He also had some less serious stuff last year from time to time.
He’s tough as nails. He proved that. But his running abilities also leave him open to injury. You can’t just dismiss it.
And the QB room was bare and I agree.
Now we have a chance to get a possible top QB transfer and it’s a bad idea?. And we don’t have another QB other than Buchner with any playing time?
Those 2 don’t add up guys?

However, with more reps he will learn to run more confident and relaxed which will reduce his injury risk. They also need to be more selective on designed QB runs. I understand there is risk though.
the risk is in Hartman short of him being guaranteed the job before committing ? I would think he would win it in a fair spring practice season. But maybe Buchner will surprise. He injury issue with Buchner has to figure in somewhere. He might not be frail but one has to acknowledge all the issues he has had and protect tram with insurance even he beats Hartman. Pyne was admirable in the effort but both Buchner and Hartman are obviously better than pyne.
Other downside is someone is going to transfer most likley. As long as it’s not muncher and Carr doesn’t recommit does it really matter? We almost need 1 less QB for roster management anyway.

Buchner missed a whole season of HS to injury and now a whole season of college.
To be effective Buchner has to run, but he can't run and stay healthy for 13 games. Bring in Hartman.
Not sure I totally trust Rees on making the decision here. I have a feeling that the Rees/MF lean is to put all the eggs in the Tyler basket and then let it ride.

This year when Buchner got hurt Angeli (true freshman) became the backup.
Next year if Buchner gets hurt then Angeli has to start (like Pyne this year) and then Minchey (a true freshman) becomes the backup.
Hopefully Buchner stays healthy and gives Hartman legit competition to start but you can't put all your eggs in the Buchner basket 2 years in a row given his injury history.
A) he's looking to improve his draft stock. Another year at a higher profile University, one that runs a more pro style offense, should hopefully help that.
B) He's got a number of NIL deals. It's conceivable that he'll make more in CFB next year than he would as a 6th round NFL pick.
It's a bad question anyway because who cares if Hartman is an NFL QB or not. The right question is, does he make the ND QB room better. The answer is, unequivocally yes.
are questions about this
He's won us games with his legs, but his arm has done it's best to lose us games. He's thrown 6 TDs and 8 INTs in his career. Four of those INTs have been pick sixes.
I would give Hartman the starting job with the understanding that Buch is going to give us a change of pace option. Buch needs the extra year in the system to improve as a passer. He'll have two remaining years to play when Hartman leaves.
what Sam thinks his chances of starting right away.
You win at Georgia, you'll always be a hero in Georgia.
You win at ND, you'll be a hero everywhere you go on the planet.
Hartman will go to the NFL regardless of where he ends up and how well he does once he gets there will have nothing to do with where he played in 2023.
He needs to get those ND sponsorships today, play out his NFL career, and then use the ND brand to get him some of the Brady Quinn post-NFL money. Don't make it more complicated than it needs to be Sam. Take the easy money.
……and that is that WF runs a gimmick offense that does not translate well to the NFL. A pro style offense with the proper talent around in and with a high profile stage could get him much needed experience and a higher draft valuation.

IF he doesn't win the starting role, I can't imagine he would be happy at all. Maybe I'm wrong there but, it's just like not wanting to keep disgruntled employees around.

I agree that if we bring him in, there should be a legitimate competition. However, let's say Buchner wins QB1. Don't you run a risk of turning Hartman into a cancer in the QB room? That wouldn't be good.
In addition, the odds would have to be pretty high that one of either Angeli or Buchner would transfer. That would be a blow to quality/experience in the QB room for 24.

Basically, if Hartman is so great, why isn't he heading to the NFL after 5 years? Also, if the message is we need experience for a QB to start, by definition you can never develop your own starters, and might cause future QB prospects to shy away from ND. Hartman is at his ceiling (26 INTs the last two years are a lot, which are ignored by the Hartman lovers) while Buchner is still on the rise. Goolsby believes Buchner can quickly get rid of his INT tendencies if he only gets to play. Finally, Hartman comes from a different system. Telling Buchner he's not the guy us a giant slap in the face.
If Hartman were a lot better, I can see bringing him in. Why not concentrated on developing our players unless someone really outstanding is available in the portal?
Not sure if More playing time gets rid of all the INT’s but there is something about more playing time brings more confidence and better decision making.
His running and physical play is outstanding.
I don’t really get the Hartman thing. Yes, a decent QB, but develop the guy you have. Minchey is coming in, Angeli is there so develop who is there otherwise why bother recruiting a QB each year. Why bother giving your word to any recruit?
Freeman will need to trust one of them sooner or later.
The Coan thing pissed me off. Get rid of the Kelly mentality. Stop allowing Kelly to ruin the QB position even after he’s gone.
But don’t bring in a better QB during the portal and as soon as TB starts throwing pick 6’s, costing us wins it will be “Fire Freeman!” “Why didn’t he bring in a quality QB!” “ I knew TB wasn’t the answer!”
Hartman can go pro but he wants to better his position. He played in that slow mesh system at Wake in which zero teams run at the next level. Come to ND, play in a pro-style system, play lights out and he works his way to a 2nd-3rd round pick. It’s a business decision for him.
Leaving the system he’s in is smart if he has designs on being a pro. However, in his system he has thrown a gazillion INT’s, has an under 60% completion rate, would need to relearn a whole new system in order to play at ND. This would mean he doesn’t have a full playbook practiced most of the season, would slow down the rest of the offense in gaining control of their positions all the while relegating the team to another year of half an offense. Also, did the talented guys you already have on the team get better, gain more confidence, gain more game experience? No!
Meanwhile at Year’s end his eligibility is gone, he is gone and now the process start’s anew. You’ve lost one more year - you’ve lost the trust of future recruits all for the sake of, someone, some pundit, some sports agent said he’s gonna be great.
Projecting Hartman as a lights out QB at ND is just more of the same - wishful thinking, wishful imagination. Maybe it works out, more than likely it doesn’t.
Is he a quality QB? He certainly isn’t as physically gifted as TB or Angeli. Does he have better arm talent than those two? No he doesn’t.
The only thing he has over ND QB’s is game experience, the one thing TB and Angeli (and soon, Minchey) need but don’t yet have. The only way to get that experience is to play.
Buchner when he was doing well, he did it to a tee. He just beat a very talented South Carolina SEC team, a team that pummeled Tennessee and then beat Clemson.
Hartman will look good in a Georgia team jersey.
However if you have the opinion that TB is a better QB than Hartman, I understand your position. We shouldn’t get excited about TB’s performance. I remember Marshall and OSU. He just beat a gamecocks team that was missing it’s starting D-lineman, Starting LB and both starting cornerbacks. The kid that was getting cooked on the long passes (To Lenzy/Jayden Thomas) was a freshman that would not have been getting reps otherwise.
Who gives us the best change to win now? Giving a QB time to develop and get game experience will leave you with a 9-4 season next year. Freeman needs to win now.
Everything he does in years 1 & 2 is setting the foundation for year 3. That's when there should be a reasonable expectation for making a run. You set yourself up better for year 3 by sticking with Buchner, Angeli and Minchey.
I see no reason why 9-3 can't be the FLOOR in 23 with Buchner. That is a more than acceptable outcome.
from poor OLine play and some poor game plan plays.
Bringing in a sub 60% passer with a high INT rate doesn’t seem like an upgrade. In fact it’s a negative for the team.
Buchner may not be Caleb Williams but he is far better than Pyne.
I really don’t understand the fantasy football mentality of this relationship to the portal.
Buchner will be just fine.
However, in the times I have seen him he hasn’t looked like an accurate passer other than the dime he dropped on Lenzy on Friday.
That's because he has 2 years in the system and his abilities allow him to do things Pyne couldn't do. Hartman would be learning a new system (and unlearning a gimmick system he has been in for 5 years). Highly doubtful he has the majority of the playbook at his disposal. And how well he would perform in a "pro-style" system is an unknown.
I’ve had harsh words about Rees and his game plans but with Buchner out there, a more stable OLine and strong RB play, the offense looked like a big time offense. Clean up some miscues and they will be tough to beat.
I’m looking for good things from Rees and Buchner next year.
He was clearly too amped up at the beginning (putting too much on his short throws). If you take away his first 5 attempts where he was 1/5, he completed 61% on the day. He settled down nicely.
They were willing to roll with him this year. Even if he were to get injured next year, your backup is no longer a true freshman. It's not apples to apples with 2022.
