On the second QB sneak
It looked like Buchner made the decision on his own to take that outside. The running back (Estime?) appeared to think he was going straight, ran up behind him to push and was surprised when he rolled right. This is what should have happened on the TE sneak in the So Cal game when they crammed 5 defenders over the center and guards.

Buchner did make a couple of audibles in the game.
At least one of his TD runs was his call. Was Pyne ever free to call an audible? Or did he? I honestly don't remember.
Pyne had the same freedom to call audibles
All QB's in this system have the leeway to call their own audibles, whether it be for changing the play, or to adjust the pass protection scheme.
Even Everett Golson made some audibles in 2012, when he was pretty green. Zaire also made a few, Kizer made many a good call, and Book was one of the best at calling them on the fly.
Pyne was no different, that he could have called his own audibles at the line.
He generally didn't, though. Instead, he'd do the "scan" and wait until there were 15 seconds left on the clock, and look over to see if Rees wanted to change the play. That got us more than a handful of delay of game penalties.
It became pretty clear to opposing DC's, that he was entirely dependent on Tommy Rees when it came to play calling, which is why a lot of times, the opposing defense got the jump on the snap, since there was barely any time left on all too many occasions. Even the top notch offensive lines (and ours became a pretty darn good one halfway through the season) in football will be at a disadvantage if the defense knows exactly when the QB will snap the ball. If this were a video game, it would be the equivalent of John Madden Football, where the player on defense could hit a button just before the player on offense hit the button to snap the ball, and often times, the QB or RB would get dumped for a loss.
It's no surprise that most of our best offense came when we snapped the ball with at least 5 seconds left on the play clock.
That makes sense. I noticed he seemed to exclusively lean on the scan.

I have some issues with Buchner from that game, but one thing he looked really high level at
was his control of the offense. He looked in complete control at LOS and knew the offense and where everyone was supposed to be. While watching game, even amongst his mental follies with the ball, it jumped out to me how smooth the offensive operation was.
I believe Buckner will clean up a lot of his mistakes
I expected a poor performance because he hadn't played in 3 months. He performed a lot better than I expected.

He played better than I expected as well and..
I saw some 'indicators' of a special player lurking in there somewhere.
Just didn't see enough that I'm willing to rule out bringing in a grad transfer like Hartman.

Agree. And he definitely has things he needs to clean up and improve on.
On the second pick six I blame Rees for the call but, Buchner needs to know not to make that throw. Overall, he needs to protect the ball better.
