Other transfers or incoming players will push us over the top. However the coaches seem to be pushing for changes that need to be made to better the roster and ultimately the team. We may have some limits as to who we can take as a transfer but within whatever boundaries they are constrained, freeman seems to be pushing those boundaries as best they can.
Standing still and hoping things work out is not part of the equation and that is a welcome improvement.
Tyler and Steve have been hear from the start. Will the team leaders be ready and willing to get behind Sam as a rent-a-player? Or is this all a non issue?
trust freeman to make good decisions, I would Imagine they would accept him. If we are going to get grad transfers this will happen quite a bit. So they better accept it and move on. Did they accept coan and Joseph?
And we may never know the answer to your question.

that movement started before Freeman was HC. Let's ask Coan and his enthusiasts how well it worked out for ND.
That's the world we live in now. At least ND seems willing to accept it.

Buchner needs another year to fully develop..

I've been waiting for another championship since 1988.
Let's win some goddamned football games.
his coming eats up a scholarship and puts 5 QB’s on scholarship. By taking this one and done player MF has disrupted the locker room and taken a away valuable practice snaps away from Buchner and Angeli (as well as the entire offensive unit) as well as game time experience. The entire offense will now need to wait for Hartman to learn a pro style O and the playbook.
I reject the idea Hartman is some sort of savior when his stats and play resemble and identify him not as an elite QB but as just better than a middle of the road player.
I suppose it would be a good move if Buchner had shown he wasn’t up to the task, but the opposite is true. This just says to me, Rees and MF are unable to develop QB’s.
On a side note:
ND winning championships is a good thing but in the end, this is college/university where education is still supposed to be a priority and not a farm system feeding the university with the deepest pockets.
has shown glimpses in very limited time. Relying solely on him with no other experience next year would be repeating the same mistake that bit us this year with his injury.
Hartman may not be the savior but this shows a willingness on the coaching staff to see personnel limitations and bolster team depth and increase competition. If a QB transfers this year as long as it’s not minchey I don’t see that as a disaster. I would like to see bucnhner stay and compete though. He may be a star but we cannot out all our eggs in that basket again.
Angeli is the most likely to transfer. Being stuck at #3 right now is a bad spot for him.
Buckner is a gamer and definitely has the tslent to lead a team to the Playoffs BUT "The best ability is AVAILABILITY" and the fact that he has missed 3 seasons in his last 5 year's of Footnall is alarming!
we really want to be competitive immediately. That's the crux of it
for that one year, then gone, when as it turns out all it did was delay opportunities for QB’s on the roster to gain experience. As I remember it, Coan was going to lead ND to a championship when his numbers and obvious visuals were that of a so-so QB.
But yeah, Hartman is better than Coan but still with not so great stats - who needs to learn an entirely new offense.
Now to Buchner - he came back from an injury and helped win a bowl game. The D held until Buchner got his confidence who then showed he can move the Offense, he showed he is a leader at QB. He can make all the throws. Yes he had one bad pick in a play call that shouldn’t have been called (that’s on Rees).
Freeman is making Kelly like mistakes. Hartman is a one and done which means ND won’t have an experienced QB when Hartman is gone. Back to square one, again.
If Hartman had 2 or 3 years of eligibility I wouldn’t have as much of an issue but 1 N done just doesn’t cut it.

Either way, we come out the winner.
If Buchner beats out Hartman during spring training, then he will have taken the steps we had hoped he would take in the 2022 season, if it weren't for that freak injury.
If Hartman beats out Buchner, then we know what we have, and that he's a solid performer all around who can run most of the playbook.
Either way, I'm fine. We'll be in a far better QB position in 2023 than we were in 2022.
