First half of the Fiesta Bowl was one of the best, if not the best, 2 qtrs of playcalling from Rees. Short, quick, easy throws, Styles, Lenzy, Austin got easy balls and got moving and got lots of quick easy yards. It was now routes, 3yd speed outs, comebacks, it was very, very easy. Then the DBs came up, as expected, and then the shallow crosses opened up, Styles got open deep, they blitzed and Tyree skirted under it and took a pass to the house. It was amazing how easy this offense threw 28pts on the board. It was the best use of Tyree his entire career at ND. They got him on the edge, he got at least 3 screens all of which got 10-15yds. Lined him up at WR and got him a quick turnaround which amounted to a run but it went for 7yds easy. What happened the 2nd half??? The run game weve seen this year should've held that game the 2nd half and been an easy win. Not only that...alllll those plays that worked, there has to be a 2nd, 3rd phase of it. Something that builds on the success so the D expects --THIS and theyre fooled by the previous success of a play to they're overreacting or reaching and you kill em with misdirection of that play, 2nd option off that play, an option route of that play...whatever. None of that.
Then you come into this year and didn't see ANYYYYY OF THAT for Buchner nor Pyne. LIke...I don't think I saw one now route ALL YEAR. When the DBs are off WRs 9yds you should have it built-in to get them the ball. It's basically a toss sweep...and now you have a Styles, big JThomas, 6-4 Colzie and TM 1 on 1 with a DB and at the very least it's 5yd play but more importantly it gets the WR involved and warm, it's a completion and confidence for the QB and keeps the D on their heels. Too much good not to do this over n over til the D adjusts. Which is what it felt like Rees was doing for Coan in the Fiesta Bowl. WHY NOT DO THAT FOR TB OR DP! It really seems like Rees overthinks or tries to make up something that no one has seen to try and bring his vision into reality. Which is FINE, but start with EASY STUFF FIRST! Once the D is rattled try some crazy stuff.
Now, you watch Hartman, he can throw anything. His deep ball is impressive. He throws a great back shoulder. He has touch and get it just about anywhere. Now you have two 6-4 WRs with elite track backgrounds in Colzie and Merriweather -- Hartman killed Ds throwing to lesser WRs but will Rees build that throw into this offense bec it's really not complicated and it seems like Rees route combos are very complicated and take forever. Hartman does a real good job of standing in the pocket and sometimes with that slow mesh he's right on top of the OL and able to throw over the top of em even though he's only 6-1; he looks a lot taller than that when he releases the ball. He and Book are both listed at 6-1 but he seems taller. Also, a big thing he DOESNT do that Pyne and Book did is wait for guys to get open vs throwing them open or throwing to an area. Buchner's ball to Lenzy was exactly the way youre suppose to throw that ball. Don't try and lead em and be accurate, just throw to a vacated space and let the runner adjust to it like Lenzy did. Buchner threw a few amazing balls in the Gator Bowl but for some reason I see a play and it's gone. How many of those WR screens that Will Fuller ate up and Styles ran last year very well...this year?? I can't remember any. Now some will say Pyne is too short and couldn't get the ball over the top...fine, run it differently...but now he has a guy who can throw that. There's no reason this offense doesn't resemble what it was in that first half of the Fiesta Bowl and actually be better.
Tyree should rarely be off the field in his Sr year. He's arguably the fastest RB in CFB who can also play WR and catch the ball well -- NOT in the backfield blocking
Styles, Colzie, and Merriweather are all elite track runners. They aren't going to be on the field with many people faster than them and Colzie and TM will be taller than anyone they line up against. Let your talented QB get them the ball EASILY...STOP making it complicated. Use now routes and jet sweeps just to get guys warm and involved. Throw up some balls to Colzie and TM and even the incoming 6-3 Braylon James and 6-2 Jaden Greathouse when they get 1 on 1 and let em be the talented playmakers you recruited them to be. You have a guy who can accurately throw that ball...why not do it?!
Estime, Tyree and Diggs are the best trio in CFB and now Price is healthy and J Love could be Ricky Watters 2.0 - No reason not to use these guys accordingly. Not just slamming them into the line but where's that old counter that we saw Kyren, Dex Williams, Tyree, Prosise all kill teams with the past 3-5yrs. Didn't see it at all this year till....end of the year. But strangely, Buchner was the one carrying the ball. Odd...so you know the play but just decide to use it now..and with a QB just coming off injury - strange. Get that play to your speed backs PLZ...you have a few of them!
I realllllly hope Hartman influences Rees with his own success and Rees is humble enough to listen and add what works for Hartman to this offense. Could be a special, special year if he does. This offense has the most prolific QB in ACC history, a tremendous offense line led by the best LT in CFB, the best RB room, and a ton of size and speed on the outside.
NO reason not to be one of the top offenses in CFB.
