At least that is the case for the Tennessee Titans field.

Maybe I missed it, but the article makes no mention of players input? When I played back in the 80s, we hated artificial surfaces. Granted, that technology is ancient, but no ib asked us our opinion..

Our home stadium and practice field were well maintained grass. Several opponent had switched to concrete based fake shit. We knew when we hit the fake shit it rattled our brains. We used to get headaches after playing in that bullshit...
It's not a safety thing, it's a thing meant to attract more eyes by making game faster.
They are trying to make it 'safer', but good old fashioned grass is still the best for safety.
No padding, except for that thin plastic layer of artificial "grass" that would give you severe skin abrasions.
That, plus the seams where the turf pieces were stitched together, would often times come apart. That horrible turf at Veteran's Stadium in Philly ended many careers, including the Bears' #1 wide receiver, Wendell Davis. I remember his jumping to catch a pass, only for his foot to get stuck in the ripped seam, and he horribly ripped apart his knee.
Some turf fields, such as Dallas' stadium, were better padded, but for the most part, playing on Astroturf would shorten your career by a large chunk by causing all of that wear and tear on your knees.
That's awful. Who got cancer?
Wasn't that part of the sale at ND? (The fewer injuries.)
(Still not sure how the grass got so shitty with just 6 games there shut down by November 17th?)

And it doesn't involve Corn Pop or going to services at black churches or getting arrested in South Africa. The practice field at my HS back in the 1960s was dirt turned hard in the summer then mud in October turned hard again in November. It was sprinkled with a dash of broken glass and a bit of gravel for good measure. It also was used as the Freshman and JV game field. Varsity games were played at Gilroy Stadium which was built on a swamp. Fun fact, Canned Heat w/ opening act Catfish performed there as did The Jackson Five in their very early years. The early Astroturf years would be like a My Pillow mattress topper compared to what we had to play on. Now, everybody get off my lawn.
