Even the tailgating is mediocre compared to what I've experienced at other midwest and southern schools.

It feels corporate and exploitative.

Although the snow game this past year was fun - the addition of an unexpected element jazzed it up a bit.

The challenge has always been tnere…80,000 seat stadium

And only 8,000 students many of whom are grad students and law school students who may not may not care about the football team. Compare that to say the SEC with 85-100k stadiums and 30-50k students. A widely dispersed fan base for Notre Dame whereas most SEC schools’ fanbases are within a days drive. Throw in a less than stellar product and lately a crappy home schedule and you have a recipe for disaster. It’s not the prices. With the advent of digital tickets it’s not nearly the rip-off it once was.

1. Some students don’t sit in the student section. Parents have tickets, etc.

2. As West Coast said, most of the 40K students graduate and then go work within driving distance of campus. Making it easier to come back for games.

Even with this advantages, these schools are struggling to fill stadium. Because watching football on TV is almost always better than being there (unless it’s a huge game with juice in the stadium).

And, given ND's admissions propensities, I don't know that any of my kids will be accepted.

I'll still watch on TV, but being there is less a draw. Given all that is going on in CFB, ND is at a fork in the road in terms of its program. There's a real risk of brand dilution, and I think the admin is in a position where it can no longer have its cake and eat it too. The got fat and lazy.

No matter how much resources are spent in marketing, ppl won't pay any price to attend a football game. Admins stupidly thought they could go deep into debt for athletic facilities, charge whatever the wanted, and fans would always do what they've always done, be loyal and spendthrift. Ahhhhhh.....no. They're running up against the wall of rationality that says we're not paying whatever you want for a subpar product. UOwe is running face first into that reality..

Had a place to shack and we would usually get cheap tickets before kickoff especially when they were paper.

The problem is multi fold; gouging on decent ticket locations, gouging on lodging, shitty opponents and most importantly, shitty on field performance.

ND has a dispersed and small alumni base. Without the subs that place is half full at best. Only way to draw the subs to pack the place is a better product and opponents. Losing at home to such luminaries as Marshall and then to the Trees which I attended tends to stifle the desire to attend. Shit, we almost lost to Toledo at home the year before.

While I am not too crazy about ticket prices another issue (not related to the university) is the price of rooms for out of town fans. We used to stay for the weekend for a reasonable cost at a place near campus. If I wanted to stay at that place last night a room would have set me back $79. That room for OSU weekend starts at $500 a night. This is not a five star property either. Doing a quick search for places in that area I am seeing prices even worse.
Needing to shell out $1000 for a room for the weekend that will sit empty most of the time (since we hit campus early even for night games) is causing me to rethink our yearly pilgrimage.
I would imagine other fans are in the same situation. For the price of tickets and a room a person could buy a huge tv and surround system and enjoy every game of the season in the comfort of their homes.

Veterans, police & fire personnel, first responders, Catholic school teachers, active military personnel, etc. we make a list of these people. “Friends of the program”

48-72 hours before each home game ND sends out a blast email to the “minute men (and minute women). You can buy up to 8 non transferable tickets to the game on Saturday. Ticket price $20/each.

(The white Sox have family Sundays. This is similar. You grow the fanbase. You give back to people who deserve to be cut a break)

I don’t want to hear about how it can’t be done. No one is sitting in those seats, sell them to people who love ND and love them back.

ND would be cutting these people a break, for that we expect every minute man & woman to be on good behavior, and to root for Notre Dame, failure to do either results in you being removed from the minuteman list.

You’d fill the house, you’d be helping people & meeting them halfway, while growing your fanbase. Plus some of these folks would likely go to the bookstore, buy a hot dog, go to the grotto &/or mass.

Just my 2 cents, as always I could be wrong.

To root for Notre Dame & be well behaved, failure to do either is removal from the list.

Teachers are a good addition to the list, and I’m sure there are others UPS men & women etc. Remember the picture of the coal miner who worked all night, and took his son to see Kentucky’s basketball practice. Like the song by Alabama “40 Hour Week (For a Living)”, let’s help those people out if we can.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post. God bless you & your family! & Go Irish 🍀

Sweetbob, if you are "just an idea guy" as you say you are----and I firmly believe that you are---for the love of God, PLEEEEEEEEEEASE DO NOT UNDERSELL your idea at the end its discussion with that final sentence. Yer throwin cold water on a very hot idea. Let it percolate amongst the masses for a bit and ring in one's ears for awhile. At the end, you made it sound like it may not be worth much. It's a great effin idea.

Maybe add this to it: A $5 "card" or "coupon" good for a 'Dog and a Drink' (large, non-alcoholic); or, a $7 card for a 'Dog and a Drink (16 oz. domestic, alcoholic)!

Only want big time fans in the first ten rows. Probably because they feed off their energy.

Let the people in who really care.

Again, this will comeback to you.

People like Catholic school teachers, veterans, police & fire, first responders, active military, sometimes show them you care, cut them a break, nobody was siting in that seat anyway, and simply put $20 > $0.

Again, “we need your help to shake down some thunder from the sky!”

If anyone from ND reads this, feel free to take this idea free of charge, I’m glad to help. Plenty of more ideas where this came from. God bless & Go Irish 🍀🏈

I believe St Francis of Assisi said, “it’s in giving that we receive.”

I think this is a win/win. You grow the fanbase, give some people a thrill, and pack the stadium…in the subject line header of the email, I’d say “we are looking for your help to shake down some thunder.”

In the movie It’s a wonderful life, it’s the genius of George Bailey that he thinks of the other person? And it comes back to him in spades… just some food for thought.
